I think a lot of people preferred the noises Zuma made over Zimbabwe to the quiet approach of Mbeki, but in his final days in office Mbeki has proven at least some of his critics wrong - I mean those who thought he was content just to let Mugabe continue with his repression and vote-rigging.
We'll have to see whether the deal between the MDC and Mugabe is the start of some sort of recovery for poor hungry Zimbabwe, but brokering the agreement was quite a diplomatic achievement. It was Mbeki's achievement. People who thought that he was doing nothing were mistaken. His view was that a compromise had to be found between ZANU-PF and the MDC and that's what he brought about.
