YouTube for transport anoraks!

A very different form of transport...

at Torquay in 2006.

And part one of an old aboard tall ships when they were still working commercially in the 1930s.

oooooooOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooh!

now there's an idea!!

can you be arrested for being drunk in charge of a preserved steam engine though? :hmm:

I reckon we should do a day on the East Lancs railway next year

I might even be tempted to come along for that if I'm allowed.

wow you're PROPAH! anoraky, you would be very welcome at a u75 train meet! It would redress the balance against all those like aqua, moomoo, callie and felix who  at us for liking the trains. they're all WRONG, they just need to be shown the error of their ways

I think they have this strange idea that being in charge of several hundred tons of iron doing 40mph whilst pissed isn't the best idea :D

I suspect a fair few drivers did back in the day, when attitudes to alcohol were slacker than they are now. I was chatting to a former BR fireman at the Bluebell Railway once, who recounted how on some out-and-back duties they'd finish preparing the engine and then go and have lunch and several pints in the pub before driving the train back.

Off topic maybe but maybe interesting for transport buffs, here's me cycling through Groningen.. 60% of trips are made there by bicycle, and looking at the urban design it is no wonder.

Within the city notice the use of the shared space concept, which encourages so many peds it makes it almost impossible to cycle at more than 5 mph, which is fast enough really, and while cars do still go into the centre of town to make deliveries etc. they hardly exceed walking pace.

The street layout then goes from completely shared, to totally segragated when on the ring road and main arterials.. with bus lane, car lane, cycle lane and pavement for peds. Great cycle parking too, and amazing traffic calming features.. lucky I was stoned all the time or I'd have had an orgasm just cycling there.

Not youtube, but I just found this too:

Bump - this is a bit

climbing the Lickey incline. It's being worked very hard indeed, and watch what happens as it goes under the second bridge...

They must have been throwing that much coal on that the exhaust gases ignited under the bridge?

I think it was probably a blowback from the firebox into the cab. It can happen with steam engines going through low bridges and tunnels if the firehole doors are open and the blower isn't open far enough to maintain the vacuum in the smokebox. That one only lasted a second or so, but they can be very nasty indeed.
