If players honoured their contracts there would be no need to rot in the reserves. You play for the club that pays your wages, they call the shots. If you decide you don't want to play for that club any more, you wait until your contract ends and you are free to go wherever you want.

but if you're not playing becasue the squad is so stupidly big, you decide you want a move and the club won't let you becasue you are 'under contract'. not totally fair is it?

That's not the case with Gallas though, he's just decided he wants 'a new challenge'. But still, as christonabike points out - you know what the situation is when you join the club, don't sign a long term contract. If you want guaranteed first team football you should be either be so good that the manager has no choice but to play you, or else join a smaller club. D Duff and W Bridge spring to mind.
