I know that Brown appears a racing certainty, but I've never believed that he was going to make it. He's missed his opportunity to strike far too often. Either he lacks the balls or the Blairites have got enough on him to keep him quiet. I have a suspicion that the gossip that was so current in the early-'90s may yet surface.

Anyway I've got £15 on Peter Hain to be the next leader of the Labour Party.

I think this cash for honours thing might seriously fuck Brown. Whatever people on here think of him, he's managed to keep himself out of immediate association with the biggest cock-ups and had a public perception of probity - that he was just as involved in 'suggesting' peerage nominees is a possible weak spot - as will, as Haller says, all the shit the press have been sat on for years...

The prediction about an early general election after Tony Blair leaves is also quite good - a sort of 'Honeymoon' period in the opinion polls after the change of leadership, similar to what happened to the Tories in 1991 - 1992 after Margaret Thatcher left.
