Your most useful present

My mother-in-law is a great believer in rummaging round in second hand shops. About 18 years ago she gave us a ratchet type nutcracker obviously well-used and somewhat battered. It's the best nutcracker ever, even on almonds. It's called a Crackerjack and sadly they appear to have gone bust, which is a very great pity.

Otherwise although a useful present it's way beyond that...Ms T and hendo gave me and Blind Lemon a joint birthday present (our birthdays are a week apart) which is one of the most inspired presents I have ever been given. A years supply of fresh coffee, ground to suit our stove top pot and delivered to our door monthly, a different type each time. Really good coffee.

They're great those nutcrackers. Great at opening the toughest nuts, even if they're a bit slower than the normal variety.

Sad to hear they've gone bust. I'll cover my parents' now.

Most of the family just ask each other what we want
If I need a new shirt for work I ask for one and then get one
All gifts are useful as a result

If we could just ban secret santa from the world it would all start to make sense

Hmm, probably my cycle helmet - it saved me from what would have been at best mild concussion and probably much worse, which is pretty useful.

Food processer - makes mayo, grinds up bread for breadcrumbs, grinds up nuts for nutroasts, invaluable for making chilli sauce - wouldn't be without it!

loads of places do. google 'beer key'

I googled "church key bottle opener", because that is what it is called in the States. Found lots of American sites :(

Also discovered that those old fashioned bottle openers that also open tins of Carnation milk, are also called "church key bottle openers".

Thanks.

Ordered :D

This arrived today, which is pretty damn efficient, I have to say! :)

I was thinking this morning, though, that my useful present was something I got on my 40th birthday. It was a saucepan, and I have been using it several times a week ever since. I was delighted at the time, in fact, because I could see that it was a decent pan, compared to all the rubbish ones I had.

That same birthday, a friend gave me a kitchen bin, which I was less impressed by, because it seemed too functional and not luxurious enough. And it broke long ago.

Mine has been a pressure cooker. My folks bought me one a few years ago and I cooked everything in it, sometimes all at once! It broke before xmas and I feel lost without it.

There is a reasonably priced one in Makro so I may replace it this weekend.

Mine was a slow cooker that I got years and years ago when a student and it's still working good :) I'm sure there's others that I can't think of.
