Your Moments of Greatness

Scoring a point from about 30 meters out in a Gaelic game for my club. I was full back that day (back in 1994).

Representing GB and Ireland in Tag Rugby in an international series against Australia. The Aussies had a semi pro on their side Jared something and I stepped him, got away and threw a great spiral out to the left wing who scored. The rest of the game was spent defending.

I just remembered, I seven-balled a friend at pool once.
My only 7 baller was when my mate broke off, went to the bogs and came back to find I'd cleared them. No fuckin' audience.

I'm struggling to think of much else than winning the school discuss competition. Oh, and a long throw in competition at some inter youth club thing - and a bar billiards comp on holiday. I think that makes me a triathlete?

I've agreed to play rugby on sat morning. First time since i was 15. the guys in question must be 90kg on average, im 60.

what could possibly go wrong. i sense a moment of greatness awaits. the flying winger. legs like a thoroughbred racehorse, sprinting the length of the pitch and carrying on straight into a taxi.

At school I volleyed a corner straight into the top right corner of the net by just swinging my leg at it and hoping. Had bend on it and everything. Total fluke. It wasn't even in a proper competitive match, we didn't even have a team of eleven but it was still fucking awesome. Naturally I held my hands aloft and basked in glory like I'd just scored the extra time winner in the World Cup final. Witnessed by all of about 7 people, all of whom still mention it to this day, I expect. Probably.

More recently, won two hundred quid playing cards on the internet.

I scored a point for Armagh U16 hurling county against Antrim when I was 15.

Few club successes as well winning cups and what not but scoring for your county is a great achievement.

Running the length of the pitch after an interception on our line to score a try v Cartha QP at u18 level. Kicking the decisive conversion against Ayr at u18 level, who were at the time second only to Stirling County in the Glasgow District. We were pretty much third. Being part of our u18 team that beat Howe of Fife who the season before had lost the Scotland u18 final.

It's hard to explain a sailing dinghy race but I'll try to describe a race that I had in an Albacore, a 15 foot 2 man dinghy, off Edinburgh many years ago. My crew and I had worked our way into the lead at the end of the first, upwind, leg and had held on to it for the next, crosswind, leg to the gybe mark; where I made a major mistake. I set off for the turning mark where we had started the race and several boats followed me but the ones who had read the course instructions more carefully set off for the correct mark some way off down the wind. Cursing horribly I followed them but I'd lost a lot of places. As the race progressed we made our way back up through the tail-enders but we were still about 50 yards adrift as we followed the leaders down the wind to the last mark before the final hard beat upwind to the finish line. But the gaggle ahead were closing up as the boats at the rear of the group blocked the wind of the leaders and they all arrived at the mark more or less together. We could hear a lot of shouting as helmsmen called for right of way and I noticed a small but widening gap opening between them and the mark as they struggled to get round. So I ran wide and came in closing on the wind and accelerating as the gap opened up just enough for us to zoom through and we were back in the lead, hard on the wind and travelling fast. Oooh! it felt so good, and I remember that moment to this day.
