Your First Festival?

Reading 1992. Was also my first gig. Only went for the day (got free tickets from a mate who had a mate who was connected to Nirvana).

Saw Melvins, L7, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Pavement, Nick Cave and, of course, Nirvana.

:)

This was mine:

I was 13 or 14. My Dad took me. The Fall were ace. It was all downhill from there ...

I wish it was still going, The Elephant Fayre. It was properly chaotic and a bit of a mess but really good fun. Inevitably, it all fell apart in the usual complaints about appalling behaviour / noise / drug dealing etc.

Fun while it lasted, though. :)

mine too, 1983, I was 18, went with my mate Andy, it was fab, so good, I've been to a grand total of 2 more ever since, you never forget your first love:cool:

i was in st germains a few weeks ago, stopped there for the first time in 26 years:eek: had a quick look around the estate -rude not to:cool:

Mersea Island off the Essex coast.

It's connected to the mainland by a causeway that gets submerged when the tide's high. This happened on the Monday and loads of people got stranded.

I love Mersea! I might be going crabbing there this week.

"The 1978 line up included over 50 acts including Misty in Roots , The Ruts, The Out, Here and Now , Nik Turner with Sphynx and Steve Hillage . The timetable itself makes interesting reading . Anthony Wilson compered the new wave afternoon which included near the foot of the bill , a little known Manchester Whitefield band called The Fall, appearing at their first festival, who were followed on stage by Durutti Column , who had just tied up with Factory records"
It was a free festival, allegedly paid for in part by Manc dealers putting a 50p surcharge on their sales. I was 14 and spent the weekend terrified my mum would find out I wasn't at my mate's house. :D

pics and history

I lost my tent, drank some mushroom tea, marvelled at it all, watched the lightning crack over the power station (think that really happened) and determined that I should it all again as soon as possible.

Cropredy 1982.

Not been since, and I don't plan to go again until 2012 (if it's still going then! ) which will be the year of my 50th birthday and 30th anniversary.

Other earlies : Stonehenge 1984 (the last relatively untroubled one), Glastonbury 1984.

Ah Treworgy, the red dust that made the place look like Mars, or was that the black microdots?

I am so fuckin jealous of everyone who made it to that one! :(

If I could relive my time I'd be there for definite, and to all the Glastonburies I missed after 1984 (didn't return til 1994, insanely). I'd give Glastonbury 1985 a miss (mudbath -- Debbie's first!) but I'd head for 1986, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993 -- almost all of which were scorchers as well as being party-crazy!

A 'friend' of mine turned up midday Friday thinking Smashing Pumpkins were going to open up the stage :D

I had to explain that it works the other way round so they would be the last ones on. Just as well because China Drum (who did open) were loads better.

for various reasons, i think '95 was my favourite Reading by a long way, although 89 had a better line-up

Only got to go coz I had to miss Glastonbury due to having two exams stupidly later than all the rest

I missed Glastonbury 1985 for exactly the same reason -- exams. But I missed a total mudbath that year ... horror stories about which sent me down the insanely wrongheaded route of missing all Glastonburies between 1986 and 1993 -- the bonkers partying years  at self.

In 1989 though, I'd have easily been able to make both Glastonbury and Treworgy had I had any sense .... :(

Glastonbury 1986. I took a sleeping bag and a spare t-shirt. Slept in the cinema tent and a mate's van. The Cure on the Pyramid Stage on the Saturday night was the highlight. Lightening and snogging some random girl from Glasgow come to mind. Didn't have a shit for the whole 3 days.

Got a mate who was at that one bangs on about it a fair bit. But does have a good photo taken from the roof of his Austin Maxi of lightening directly behind the mainstage when the Cure was on so it looks like its hitting the pyramid

I really can not remember too well as the later part of my teenage years are a bit of a haze, but I am pretty sure it was one of those 1 day Anti-Nazi League festivals around 1992/3.

Hmm, or it may have been the Wivenhoe Festival in 1992  I was taking far too much acid in those days to remember time lines properly
