I owned a 1972 Alfa GTV Bertone 2000 , great car except when it rained , the wipers operated inwards , how to explain ? ,they were fixed to the outer edge of the windscreen and swept towards the middle , if it rained too heavily they would hit each other in the middle of the screen and jam together , Italian design beautiful but totally usless , it was still probably the best car I have ever owned :D

great thread BTW

The junior was a 1300/1600 version I think... much the same body, if not identical.

1750/2000 ones are choice imv. Lots of parts shared with the spider too, so you can get uprated ones with a few improvements to brakes etc.

Not cheap mind you - 5 to 10k.

I paid £ 2500 in the mid 80`s and looked after it like a baby , garaged everynight and didnt use it in the rain or Winter months for the 1st year , the noise it made was fantastic though it was never very quick ,second year I was less careful and used to drive it to the station everyday , it fell apart around me and I had to sell it for £ 500 .

Rust? Or just not screwed together properly?

Rust mainly , the headlights dropped out , the seals around the boot corroded and it started to leak into boot , wheel arches bubbled , it was a real mess .Very sad ,although an Alfa enthusiast bought it from me with the intention of restoring it , I guess in that era Alfas along with all Italian cars were renowned for rusting and were just not meant to go through an English Winter . It wouldnt stop me from getting another one though but it would be a Summer only car , Alfa then and still make cars which are exciting to drive , bollocks to driving in silence , what you want is to be able to hear the engine as you drive but not hear the sound of bits falling off :D

Heard news that a new sugar-based compound is being tested as a substitute for salt. Fingers crossed...

My Mini's wiper blades fell off on a regular basis.

I think that was a problem common to all Austin / Morris / BL cars. The secret was to drill a small hole between the arm and the splined shaft (both of which were made out of stupidly soft metal) and screw a small self tapper in to the hole.

Worked on my 1300 anyway.
