And who knew

referred to a hill beyond the city's walled boundaries?

Yes, should be 'outwith' surely?

In fact, what with Jesus not being crucified in Oxfordshire, the 'green hill' bit's probably not very accurate either.

Autumn Days. I'd just looked it up soon as I saw the thread, hoping I'd be the first to post it. I always loved autumn as a kid and we sang this over and over at my primary school. I actually got goose-bumps and welled up with tears when I loaded this up:

Wish I was seven again :(

I would be great if it didn't have all that thank you to god bollocks.

I would be great if it didn't have all that thank you to god bollocks.

But as kyser_soze already pointed out, it doesn't have any god bollocks. We infer it from the context we learnt it in, and that was no doubt the writer's intention - but it doesn't say at any point who or what we're supposed to remember to thank.

Bacon makes me feel sick, and the jet plane thing is a bit silly, but I can feel thankful for the existence of most of the other things in the song's lyrics, even though I definitely don't believe God made them.

I have a vague recollection of a book with a picture of the earth taken from the moon, which might have been called Everybody Sing. There was one called Let My People Go where we could shout the word "shout".

What is that one about "airplanes meeting in the air to be refueled".
If you didn't pick that when it was hymn request time, you would get great big scowls from everyone.

And the silk inside the chestnut shell, jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled, all these things I love so well.

My absolute favourite! :)

We sang a modern one called Look Out For Loneliness, which exhorted listeners to look out for lonely people in public places. In retrospect, this song could have encouraged children to approach disturbed people in the park.

I had to do 'jerusalem' at a wedding the other day and by fucking god thats a hard hymn. I followed the tried and tested path of listening for a voice that knows what its doing and follow that. This being a heathenish congregation that was the priest who was joyfully bellowing in a most un-anglican manner.

But then we got to do 'give me oil in my lamp, the school classic. That was better.

Surprised nobody's mentioned "Autumn Days" - which has the lyric "...and a win for my home team" (cue chanting of "the North End, the North End...) Was always our favourite but they limited it's use :D
