Your favourite gangster movie?

theres only one good scene in dead prez, when the bloke pops out of the bin wearing the whiteface and starts shooting

'snot about individual 'moments' or 'great scenes', it's a great film because of its overall mood, its fantastic soundtrack and the way it links the crimez bit with the vietnam bit.
also great because any movie letting Bokeem Woodbine's outrageous dentition roam free deserves credit.

one of the simplest and strangely most effective things in OUATIA is where the camera will focus in hard on a point of light then slowly draw back to reveal a later (timewise) scene. Such a simple idea and so startling. To me anyway.

There are 3 main strands going on here - classic crime movies of the 1930s, movies about the Mafia and organised crime, and movies about black/youth gangs from the late 20th century on. They're not the same thing

4 strands if we include the humble brit crime flick

i thought that was absolute shite, although that guy out of the long firm did have a few good moments

me and the then ladyfreind watched it and gave up half way through. Just awful.

Well there you go. Me, 95% of the critics, and 81% of the audience on rotten tomatoes disagree.

You don't have something against the Irish, do you?

For me its Godfather 1 and 2. 3 should be quietly forgotten about.
Sexy Beast
Long Good Friday.
Scarface
Donnie Brasco
Goodfellas
Gomorrah
Mesrine 1 and 2...cassels was just excellent in both.
Performance had its moments, in the midst of all the surreal shit. James Fox put in a good turn there. Went totally doolally afterwards mind.

The Departed and Eastern Promises are two of my favourites. The latter is one of the few gangster movies that has a genuine focus on the victims of organised crime, rather than just being obsessed with cops vs gangsters or gangsters vs other gangsters.

in godfather 1, the geezer makes a tomato sauce 'with all your sawasage and meatbawls' - and it is an excellent recipe. i use it everytime.

bit long and crap 'buddy' ending. denzil was better in training day.

carlitos a bit of a redemption story and altho i hate 70s retro, al looks great in one of thoes long leather 'northern soul' coats.

alpha dog.

justin tiberlake is suprisingly good.

I thought it one of the worst films I have ever seen. Bunch of valley brats acting like tough guys and calling each other 'bitch' all the time. Not so much 'gangster' as 'gangsta' wannabe coke dealing pricks beating on other coke dealing pricks.

Why are people surprised Timberlake can act? He's been in front of a camera since he was 6yo.
