Hard to beat this un
Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up (more percussion I guess than drumming)
Poss my fav vid ever for so many reasons:
read the thread title and immediately thought of this. Not sure why but after listening it stands up so here you go, play it loud.
Bobbie Gillespie pretending to be Mo Tucker on never understand is another fav. But maybe not for this thread.
the whole of this session is brilliant, and would be just for Barney's short shorts.
He was a very naive guitarist wasn't he.
The two that I immediately thought of were Mushroom by Can and King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown by Augustus Pablo. Hard to choose between them - I think Tubby Meets Rockers might just be a hair ahead .
favourite? paul cook's drumming at the start of 'no fun'
Every single thing on this is peak new order. I love it. Bernie getting a stiffie as he gets angrier, hooky just staring at him, morris needing a piss (edit: whilst wearing a proper shirt) - the shorts, the hair, the leads, the gay sperm. Everything.
Oh yeah, barney arguing in the booth as well
First one I thought of was "Johnny Was."
its a gig, not a song, but you get the gist.
Not just me then.
I'd fallen into a J&MC shaped hole because of this thread but now back to SLF and a full-on nostalgia trip.
wow, that's proper nostalgia!
e2a I've listened to SLF most years along the way but haven't given a thought to the Dave Clark 5 since- at a guess- some time before I found London and Luxemburg
Although Pirroni's guitar is equally as good at holding the whole bizarre thing together.
The burundi drummers want their royalties.
I saw them in St Austell the night before that. They were great at that too. According to Hooky's book they were all unbelievably hungover from the night before and half of them got lost on the way to London. Might explain a thing or two. Or maybe not.
He has a right strop during Temptation iirc.
The ones that come to mind:
Ata Kak - Daa Nyinaa
Alhaji K. Frimpong - Kyenkyen Bi Adi Mawu
Can - Oh Yeah
Nisennenmondai - Mirrorball
The Slits - I Heard it through the Grapevine
Zamla Mammaz Manna - Odet
Floh de Cologne - Wir werden immer mehr
The Who - can't explain
Sun Ra Archestra - Perfect Man
Around 7.30 - when moon comes storming in. like a wall being kicked down. building brilliantly to the climatic scream.
Can't decide between Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk" and Cozy Powell's "Dance with the Devil" ...
There's a reason Ian Brown doesn't start singing until 1:48 and it ain't just because he can't sing.
Not a classic like some of the ones mentioned so far, but I've always liked the intro to this:
budgie always good value if you like gothy pounding toms
