Your drumming God

Are you yanking my pubes? Danny fucking Carey? Because having lots of cymbals and doing wanky fills makes you a good drummer, doesn't it?

no, i'm not yanking your pubes. i think danny carey is an amazing drummer. its not all just wanky fills, see dream theatre for wanking, at least Tool are respectable

Only joking the right answer is obviously Art Blakey...if in doubt go and listen to 'A Night in Tunisia'.

No. What you mean is Sandy Nelson is a great drummer, but Art Blakey is the answer to give if you wish to b e taken (rather too) seriously.

Moe Tucker, just 'cos.

+ David Narcizo

I haven't been to see any live bands for some years now so I am not very well up on younger players - the Rolands as posted by someone earlier are more to my taste nowadays!

Excluding Buddy Rich who I was lucky enough to see twice (went with my Dad who is a big jazz fan), John Bonham.

Pete Erskine formerly of Weather Report is awesome, saw him in the Jaco line up and am yet to see a drummer do so much with such a small kit !! Also well impressed when seeing Stewart Copeland live with The Police from a backstage seat...!

Id go with Mr Chamberlain too! Drums become a real lead instrument with drummers like him!

Him and er Phill Collins! (oh god I do hope that people will not for one moment think im serious  )

trouble is, he is (was?) actually a damned fine drummer. specially he played outside Genesis in the 70s -stuff with Eno etc. sad but true.

for me, for sheer machine attack, it's Todd Trainer from Shellac.
for polyrhythm brilliance, it's the John's (Herndon / McEntire) from Tortoise. and Jaki Leibzeit.
best reggae drummer is probably Leroy Horsemouth Wallace - such feel :)

drummers - I saw Fantomas in Camden awhile back and the guest drummer there was absolutely crazy fast / precise.

Can't for the life of me remember the guys name, but if your interested in technical drummers you should check fantomas out.

Any drummers who work with Thapelo Khommo.

Yeah have to say Keith Moon.

Saw Samantha Maloney ex Hole in Motley Crue (!) and more recently with Eagles of Death Metal and she had more energy than I've seen in any other live drumming performance.

how a bout Sheila E as a great female drummer who did the Sign O Times tour with Prince?

according to her website she is a full on christian, which makes sense playing with Prince who is a born and bred seventh day adventist ("sign of the times" is the name of the 7thday adventist journal - a bit like the watchtower for jehovas witnesses)

Another vote for Buddy Rich. Was lucky enough to see him twice in thre New Theatre cardiff when i was about 12/13,and he played one of his last ever gigs in Barry Memorial Hall.he died within days!

I saw him at the New Theatre too, and at about the same age. Must have been the same gig. Small world.

I seem to remember it didnt start til about midnight or something!

Is this a studious attempt to ignore the one true drumming god or something? I cannot BELIEVE no ones mentioned Dave Grohl - after FOUR bloody pages!!! Dave Grohl on Songs for the Deaf is just...GOD!

In no particular order ....

Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix Experience) - manic stuff, the perfect foil for Hendrix's playing.

Keith Moon - completely bonkers and his drumming reflected that.

John Bonham - monstrous sound and great invention.

Neil Peart (Rush) - the only man (apart from Bonham) ever to do a drum solo which didn't bore me.

Ian Mosley (Marillion, among others) - understated, unfussy and always right on the money.

Will Calhoun (Living Colour) - can drum in absolutely any style from thrash to jazz to African pop - amazing.

Dave Grohl - the only man who could ever replace John Bonham in the extremely unlikely event that Zep tour again.

Dominic Greensmith (Reef) - live he was always right on the money .... much more inventive than the band's music would suggest.

Don't understand the votes for Mitch Mitchell. He was a feckin nightmare. :D

Another one for Keith Moon here. :)

And for Reni - bonkers. Looked like an octopus.
