The dog whisperer is NOT shit, its cool! its got dogs in it! I watch all the dog programmes :o

If your dog sits on you its because he doesnt respect you, and if he leans into you when sat next to you its because hes claiming you as his.

the dog whisperer is akin to a haynes manual.. or a call centre worker; great for routine stuff but pretty shit if you need to deal with something out of the ordinary or go off script...

amechain bonding, yadda yadda yadda.. bollocks. Jan Fennel based her stuff on work done by a guy called John Fisher and its all based arround pack hierachy. The theory that the alpha role can be taken by a human is bollocks too - IMO. Firstly we are not dogs, we are unable to communcate with a dog naturally. Secondly I dont know about you but if it ever came down to a direct "challange" for the alpha role between me and one of my dogs my money would not be on me to win. Dogs have big pointy teeth and can go chomp quite efficiently. They are generally faster than we are, more agile than we are and much much better at fighting than we are. So any natural pack hierachy would not have a human at its head.

John Fisher was questioning his theories on pack ranking towards the end of his career.

still any programme with dogs in has at least one redeaming feature.

stange things our dogs dont like.. wheelbarrows, hoover and the plumber who will be helping fit our kitchen next week

pingu i disagree , If a dog did not see a human as its pack leader it would attack to gain dominance . This is why dogs attack in the case of bad owners who do not let the dog no its place in life . You no the storys of children savaged because the child touched the dogs toy or sat in the dogs seat . I can do anything to my dogs and they take it just the same as my gf son can do anything to them with out a murmer of them , Why ?? because they know were they stand in the pack they eat last they are bottom of the barrel and they no it , That said between the 2 they have a pecking order what the bitch says the dog does .

My dogs know who is boss they do wrong depending what they have done they get a punishment to fit the crime . I gain control of them from a young age they are scared of me like they should be . They are a lethal weapon that can kill with ease , I relise this that is why i need the control of them .
At the same time my dogs recieve all the love and care they can ever wish for they are allowed to hunt every day . The happiest dogs in the world are the ones allowed to follow there natural urges to hunt and kill . Mine know there place in the world and to be honest it is a very good one they eat better than a lot of humans in the world that i can gaurantee .

Bottom line for me is dogs are simple creatures , You treat them right they will will give you love and loyality back in abudance .

My terrier hates the hoover - has to be put in another room when the hoovers on. Goes mental if you even move it, say, to get into the cupboard where it's kept.

He also hates motorbikes and scooters. He'll near strangle himself on his lead if one goes past.

Ballons and bubbles freak him out. Not in an aggresive way like with the hoovers or m/bikes but in a proper frightened way. Cries and yelps and shivers.

Old people. Especially with sticks. Not as bad as he used to be, but being a terrier old folks like to stop and say hello to him. He invariably shouts at them and makes a tit of me and him.

Other dogs/cats/squirrels. Especially if he can't get to them - like if he's in the garden and they run past he goes proper loopy.

The joys of rescue dogs, eh? :)

so go on then give me your theory on how dogs learn and other behavioural matters? do you see cannine pack hierchy as the same as a wolf packs?(which is what the early john fisher and jan fannel stuff is based upon). dog packs do not behave in the same way as a wolf pack There is often no clearly defined alpha male\female. Ddifferent dogs will take the lead role depending upon the task. studies of feral and wild dog packs show many differences between canine behaviour and wolf behaviour. This throws into doubt the classic pack ranking theories originally put forward by John Fisher.

I would far rather have a dog do something because it wanted to than becasue it was frightened of me. A dog that does something out of fear is only ever one step away from biting. This is why the majority of police forces now use positive reinforcement as a training method rather than the outdated negative methods they used to use. It produces much more reliable behaviour and more predictable responses.

out of interest what sort of dogs do you have. I would never dream of attempting to dominate the dogs here. If I got a fear conditioned responce that meant the dog chice the fight option it would be a very one sided fight and I would probably have pictures of my scarred and battered body on the front page of the scum under a Headline like "Man savaged in ...."

Lurchers , Fear does not mean they are one step away from biting anyone , It means they know what is expected of them . It comes down to respect i respect them they respect me bottom line is i am boss . As for learning .. Well my dogs learn from me , I am the one that sets the standards of what they can do and what is wrong . So basicily they do something wrong i let them know that it is wrong then it dosnt happen again ( most of the time ) . In my experience its about repetition with dogs the more they do the more they learn . Its like hunting i can not teach them to hunt , They learn when we are out they learn certain smells mean certain things and what they need to do to catch that smell . They will get this wrong but soon learn to get it right . I disagree with the no pack bit . From what i have seen/know of packs the top dog runs the pack untill he gets ousted from power , All the others in that pack no there place and in the norm things run well like this .

My dog hates watching tv without her glasses.

Are you two trained behaviourists? :)

I have a HNC in Cannine Behaviour and Training and am a qualified BIPDT dog trainer. But apart form that its an area I have an interest in so study it. Its more of an interest than anything else tbh.

Dogs can train humans much better than humans can train dogs

My friend claims that when his dog (a huuuuge scary rottweiler) growled at him once he held a knife to his dog's throat and the dog backed off
