Your club's best Englishman, Scotsman, Welshman, Irishman of all time

Does anyone have any idea how the 1961 lot would do against cossetted, diet-controlled modern players, though?

This is often aired when players from decades past are compared to modern day. I think you judge a player by the context in which he played. Today's game may be faster, but I would have confidence that over time, 60s-80s players would build up fitness, compete and at times outplay today's crop. You can also consider the counter of that. Of course, England's "golden generation" have hardly distinguished themselves in the slower, more considered field of international football.

English: David Kemp
Scottish: Dickie Hughes
Irish: Alan McLoughlin
Welsh: ..................er.... Carl Robinson?

Sheff Utd:

Phil Jagielka (England)*
Dean Saunders (Wales)
Alan Kelly (Ireland)
No idea (Scotland)

* I'm assuming that "all time" also includes the future, by which time Phil Jagielka will be the best English defender

Wimbledon FC/AFC Wimbledon

English - Dave Beasant
Welsh - Vinnie Jones
Scottish - Neil Sullivan
Irish - Kenny Cunnigham
N.Irish - Michael Hughes

Ipswich

English - Kevin Beattie
Scottish - John Wark
Welsh - I'll think of one.......
Irish - Allan hunter
Republic of Ireland - Matt Holland

Bobby Moore (E)
No idea about the others. Liam Brady (I)? Ray Stewart (S)? Bugger. Craig Bellamy (W)? Erm, eeerrrr.....Iain Dowie (NI)?

While they played for us or over their whole career? If the latter then Cardiff City's would be:

John Charles (Wales)
Robbie Fowler (England)
Ian Gibson (Scotland)
Ron Healey (Ireland)

Dixie Dean
Kevin Sheedy
Neville Southall

Of course Sheedy was one of those English Irish players.

ETA - I remember when he scored against England in some World cup or other that I was the only 'England fan' in the bar to jump up shouting "Sheedy!"

Villa

Gordon Cowans (English)
Charlie Aitken (Scottish)
Dean Saunders (Welsh)
Paul McGrath (Irish)

The English and Scottish ones are tough due to the ammount of decent players we've had from there. I plumped for Sid Cowans for the ammount of time he's been associated with the club (he still is as a coach) and Charlie Aitken for the same reason (he's the longest serving player in our history).

pah, parochialism...

Eng - Charlton
Welsh - Hughes
Scot - Law

Rest of Europe - Cantona, errr, no, Ronaldo
Rest of World - ermmmm err errr, Tevez :( - jaysus, must be somebody else

Acually comparing the list of Liverpool players to the list of United one's is pretty funny, United's shits on the red shites.

That is possibly the funniest, yet misguided, footballing assumption I've ever heard....

I dunno think the 4 picked in the first few posts beat Liverpools hands down...saying that if you add up the trophies the repsective teams one etc..
Utds four take some beating

Dalglish beats Law for caps. They scored the same goals (30).
Rush over Giggs for caps and goals.

You can't really beat Bobby Charlton and Keane beats Whelan for caps and goals.

Hey lets play Top Trumps :D
