your all time fav ever poem...

The Planters Daughter by Austin Clarke. There were protestant planters in old Ireland, and one of them had a beautiful daughter. She walked into the Catholic pub one night, and this is what happened.



When night stirred at sea,
An the fire brought a crowd in
They say that her beauty
Was music in mouth
And few in the candlelight
Thought her too proud,
For the house of the planter
Is known by the trees.

Men that had seen her
Drank deep and were silent,
The women were speaking
Wherever she went --
As a bell that is rung
Or a wonder told shyly
And O she was the Sunday

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:

The Second Coming

I love that poem. My son (he's 9) learned the first two versus by heart.
 
Load of Edwardian Kitsch.. but I love the The Green Eye of the Little Yellow God by J Milton Hayes.

There's a one-eyed yellow idol to the north of Khatmandu,
There's a little marble cross below the town;
There's a broken-hearted woman tends the grave of Mad Carew,
And the Yellow God forever gazes down.

He was known as "Mad Carew" by the subs at Khatmandu,
He was hotter than they felt inclined to tell;
But for all his foolish pranks, he was worshipped in the ranks,
And the Colonel's daughter smiled on him as well.

He had loved her all along, with a passion of the strong,
The fact that she loved him was plain to all.
She was nearly twenty-one and arrangements had begun
To celebrate her birthday with a ball.

He wrote to ask what present she would like from Mad Carew;
They met next day as he dismissed a squad;
And jestingly she told him then that nothing else would do
But the green eye of the little Yellow God.

On the night before the dance, Mad Carew seemed in a trance,
And they chaffed him as they puffed at their cigars:
But for once he failed to smile, and he sat alone awhile,
Then went out into the night beneath the stars.

He returned before the dawn, with his shirt and tunic torn,
And a gash across his temple dripping red;
He was patched up right away, and he slept through all the day,
And the Colonel's daughter watched beside his bed.

He woke at last and asked if they could send his tunic through;
She brought it, and he thanked her with a nod;
He bade her search the pocket saying "That's from Mad Carew,"
And she found the little green eye of the god.

She upbraided poor Carew in the way that women do,
Though both her eyes were strangely hot and wet;
But she wouldn't take the stone and Mad Carew was left alone

I adore this poem. When it appeared in the GCSE anthology i was so pleased - and then surprised, cos the kids tend not to be able to see past the slightly harsh turns of phrase, and just find it funny. To me it is arch sincerity of the purest love - and when you think that he was famous precisely for his romantic hyperbole, it's so powerful in sentiment

I studied "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" for A Level and really enjoyed it. It is just so visual, you can really imagine how the ancient mariner, the ship, the albatross, the sea looks.

Plus this stanza has always stayed with me for some reason. I long for the opportunity to use it in a pithy and/or witty way but as that would probably entail having been shipwrecked I am not sure that will happen, or would be appreciated if it does!

"Water, water, every where,
And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, every where,
Nor any drop to drink."

That is magnificent, even if it's wholly or mostly incorrect, sad to say.
 
I've got a new favourite poem.

Burning stakes blossom from the footsteps of the christ redeemers;

It is a Buddhist doctrine that all doctrines must fail;

the hedonist trembles, for his life comes only once

In the great insane asylum
of this revolving earth chaos creates the rules.
There are believing and unbelieving fools.

The dazzle on the sea, my darling,

I have several favourites, including Anthem for Doomed Youth by Wilfred Owen and Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience. By the bye, I always think that the first quatrain of Blake's Auguries of Innocence serves as a very good description of the purpose of poetry:

To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.
 
They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself
