Young Tory dresses up as Madeleine McCann for a laugh

I went to a party where a mate of mine went dressed as Maddy. This was back when she was still making frontpage headlines every day. The general consensus was that his costume was excellent; the sheer unashamed tastelessness of it all made it amazingly funny, and woe betide anyone who got a bit offended - at that point in time there was a feeling that we almost hope she did fucking die, just so we wouldn't have to hear about her any more.

So, for a student pisshead in a vaguely ironic and knowingly offensive costume, I think that's fine and actually pretty funny. For a somewhat prominent Tory with apparent political aspirations, I think that's clearly completely stupid and thoughtless, even though I find it in no way offensive. I found the way the media jumped on the story that summer as an easy way to sell papers far more offensive than any crude joke.

"To send men to the firing squad, judicial proof is unnecessary. These procedures are an archaic bourgeois detail. This is a revolution! And a revolutionary must become a cold killing machine motivated by pure hate."

Further proof that all Che-admirers must be made into ex-Che admieres at the soonest possible juncture if you catch my dift (nudge, nudge, wink, wink)

You took your time with that come back, might aswell not have bothered. Though it was better than I had anticipated.

p.s - your politics are shallow and onanistic.

But he is a student and no doubt a pisshead too. The Guardian have called him prominent but then say he's "believed to be in his early 20s" so he can't be too prominent. He's chair of the Staffordshire branch of CF which probably doesn't take too much work.

Yeah, well like I said, I have no problem with him doing that, it's tasteless but free countries such as ours allow for tastelessness. I only think, as has already been noted here, that he's fairly clueless if he thinks he's going anywhere in politics by acting like a student pisshead and letting it be viewed by the world on the internets. There must be some sort of political liability if both he and the Tories have had to issue a full and frank apology. It's still a bit of a non-news story though, to be fair - just like most Maddy stories.

In matters of onanism, I must yield to your good self on grounds of gross inexperience. :p

My point, such as it is, is that young people have always delighted in causing outrage. Were the "hang Mandela" crowd a coalition of evil racialists and believers in Mr Mandela's guilt, or just saying a thing guaranteed to wind-up their opponents? I guess the latter. Politics has rather less to do with this than youthful idiocy.

Or not.

And how many of the juvenile dolts who wore "hang Mandela" had fully thought through the implication of what they were doing, or knew what sort of creeps they were involved with?

I'm sure I could grub up some links of students saying nice things about Cuba, "Fidel" and the IRA. Or the USSR, for that matter.

Both sides of the political spectrum have their unsavory associations and share of fools. Still not seeing any wider implications.

ok, he was a stupid, tastless idiot. If he ever goes anywhere in politics these pictures will be dragged out. Therefore he will never be a polititician. Story dead?

You're a thick fucking 'yahoo' aren't you? :D

Show this to your parents - it'll make them weep with pride.

This urban argument - that the sins of the press mean that you need not retain your own ordinary empathy for someone else's tragedy, or even a reasonable sense of presumed innocence just shows what fucking sheep you are.

They jump - you say 'baa' and if you do it in a bellicose enough way you think it shows independence of thought. I bet you would electrocute your fellow students in the name of experimentation.

Hilarious.

I haven't got a clue what you're talking about, but I can assure you I am not a "thick fucking yahoo", as you charmingly put it.

My point was not that the media coverage made Maddy jokes acceptable; I just felt the coverage was far more offensive than a tasteless joke.

I don't know where you're getting this sheep stuff from; this was a conclusion I came to myself. I wouldn't electrocute my fellow students (I'm no longer a student) and I don't quite understand why you think I would.

Just because I have no problem with this joke does not mean I have no sympathy or empathy for the tragedy, just as I am very much empathetic towards the thousands of parents since Maddy disappeared who have also lost children, and been completely ignored by the media.

You need to look at your sorry khunt selves.

How apolitical are you all?

Your class enemies take the piss out of a (possibly/probably) murdered, ordinary child and you lot go 'Yeh, so what man, seen it all before'.

You are allowed to be momentarily outraged without joining the moral majority y'know.

Still at least there is some consistency as so many here were tasteless tossers about the whole sorry sorry in the first place.

You knobs!!

An almost certainly murdered child. And murdered because her parents were neglectful, and yet have been sanctified by most of the media. Taking the piss out of her can't hurt, she's beyond that. Taking the piss out of her parents is entirely justified.

I interviewed Gary Glitter once. Have to admit, I quite liked him. But then, I was in my late 20s at the time, so well beyond the stage he'd find attractive... ;)
