Peugeots, at least the 306s, seem to have good reputations as fairly reliable workhorses.

My friends had a 306 and it was an absolute nightmare *_*. They bought it at auction (probably not the best move for inexperienced auction buyers) in Maidstone and on the way back home to Bristol, the head gasket went and they only ever had problems with it after that.
