Yeovil Pen Mill annd Junction railway stations

Have you done it yet? If so how did you get on?

No, not yet.

I want to go from Weymouth to Sherborne at some point, and the Yeovil-Yeovil train option is the only option.

However, the specific journey I was going to make is Weymouth to Axminister next Saturday. If you do it by train, the only option is Yeovil-Yeovil.

But miraculously, there is a bus that goes directly between the two, which I didn't realise existed til I started looking at some of those travel website. Of course, that would be the sensible option but I know that tootling around country lanes at high speed in a double-decker bus is not a great deal of fun, so I am still umming and aahhing about that one.

(On the X53 that goes from Weymouth along the coast, I have come close to decorating the chairs with vom a couple of times :D)

Actually, remembering how infrequent and unreliable the Weymouth to Yeovil Pen Mill train service is, I'm going to go for the bus option.

I'll save the Yeovil Pen Mill-Yeovil Junction experience for when I go to Sherborne, which will be quite soon as well.

Thanks everyone.

The 31 yes? http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/southwest/dorset/timetables/index.php?operator=7&page=1&redirect=no (scroll down)

I used to travel home from school on that one back in the day when it was the 495 that went Taunton to Weymouth.

You can pick-up the Weymouth train from Thornford about 2 miles from Sherborne. There is a bus that goes near.

It is a request train & you need to flag it down.

On the way back you need to tell the driver so that he will stop.

Cheers. I've just been looking at those two public transport websites above, and I could also get a train from Weymouth to Yeovil, then get the bus from Yeovil to Sherborne. Decisions, decisions...

Walking between the two is quite easy but allow at keast TWO hours and be careful.
STOPrisk and walk along the fields, the road is VERY dangerous. The new CONDEM
government has cut bus routes so to be safe plan on a TAXI. Make sure it is a proper
licensed RMT taxi as minicabs DO overcharge ! All in all it is a great walk but if you
have a boat to catch, better go via Salisbury and just walk across the platform !

Remember in the UK be OK and STOP risk for good ~ TAKE CARE AND watch out !

There was a rail shuttle many years ago betwen the 2 - even in the 1950's it carried fresh air mostly.

Economics I regret kick in. When I used to do Train Manager voluntary work on steam specials in the mid 80's - there was a bus link provided by "Brutonian Coaches" - a wonderfull 1950's vintage bus akin to Pearce and Crump in the Titfield Thunderbolt.

There were ideas in the semi recent past for chord line between the 2 routes allowing for an Exeter to Weymouth link , but regrettably not enough potential business to make it fly. A pain - but railways need volume - especially in these days of economic tightness with the need to shake a billion a year out of operating costs.
