XP Upgrades

you would need a cracked version of windows. One that doesn't require activation via the normal methods. The link addy gave you was for a bittorrent tracker. This is a peer to peer technology used for distribution of data files. You would need some bittorrent software installed to utilise this.
You are correct in saying that the there is no way of verifying whether or not the software is verified against viruses rootkits etc, but this is the price to pay for pirated stuff.
Your options are therefore limited, you bite the bullet and pay for Windows XP. Ignore the OEM stuff it doesn't apply in your case. You need a full version. And that costs.
Or you go the warez route. It's viable, but you need to be cautious and practice extremely safe surfing. Otherwise your next thread is how can I get rid of xyz virus. And it can be very hard living with your conscience once you have pirated Microsoft Software.

Or you go the Open Source (linux) way. For free. At first it's not as intuitive but when it all comes together it's very rewarding.

none of the game i play work with linux, so why would i use it?

I know what a bittorrent is; i use them a lot. I am saying tha the link contains no comments verifying the file or any info on what it actually does.

i have no idea if the copy of windows i have is cracked or oem or not; it has the code number and that's it.

well apologies for not fully knowing what you do or don't know. I mean you are not coming across as the most enlightened person in these matters.
Maybe if you said where you got your XP from? eg, was it
a)
daan the boozer.
b)
PC world
c) Someone burnt it for you.
d) it came with a computer.

Any of these might provide clues as to whether it legal or not.

ps. http://www.void.gr/kargig/blog/2005/12/10/warcraft-3-on-linux/

edit:don't mean to sound so catty, but noone can actually support you here until you know what it is you want.

I didn't get it, it belonged to my father. It was probably done by one of his mates. Looking on the disk i can't find any folder marked 'crack' or anything. the box has the registration number/code on it, that's it.

i don't profess to be the most enlightened man when it comes to these things. never have.

Then its a copy then. TBH it will be easier to get a mate around (or a mate-of-a-mate) to do the upgrade for you...

Doing the actual upgrade itself isn't hard and you won't damage your computer in the process (as long as you back-up all your personal data). The only hard step would be locating the said patch so that you can continue to get updates from Microsoft...

Btw, you do know you can a legit copy of Windows Xp if you buy a piece of hardware (ie a mouse) at the same time..? Could be the easiest way of upgrading...

why did you assume it wasn't a copy? I told you it was. It's fairly obvious because the cd is homemade (ie, the label stuck onto the disc certainly ain't well made!).

Because "a copy of..." can be a legit copy or a non-legit copy... Unless you specify which it could be either...

Surely it should be a

?

And I did wonder that, but came down to why ?? Trolling a techie forum has to be on a par with depth-charging fish in a barrel ?

It must be my faith in human nature shining through again ! (or has that 2nd joint just kicked in? :D)

hang on, are you saying that someone can sell a pirate copy of windows so long as they sell a piece of hardware? wtf!

If it's legit, why would you need to sell hardware?

This makes no sense to me at all.

OEM software may be licensed under conditions requiring that it be sold with computer hardware. To avoid contravening the conditions while passing OEM software savings on to end users, some retailers will sell OEM software with a token hardware device of small cost, such as an obsolete motherboard, single SIMM, or a cable splitter to satisfy the letter of the licensing agreement. This practice is questionable, and may open the end user to audits by publishers.

Or to put it another way, by selling a piece of hardware rather than a whole system along with the OEM copy of the OS or Office or whatever, some sellers claim they're still honouring the terms, if not the spirit, of their OEM agreement with MS.

And its not usually a pirate copy, it's an OEM copy normally sold with a new computer.

you're accusing me of trolling? Why? :(

I get a lot of people per week asking me ridiculous questions regards to computers / internet...etc

I ask 2 questions back..
1. can you read?
2. do you have www.google.com saved in your bookmarks/favourites?

why the need to ask so many questions that have been answered so many times before when all the answers are available with a little self help.

so my post stands:
shirly
this poster
is a
troll?

Have you read the sentence to which you are replying...?

"Btw, you do know you can a legit copy of Windows Xp if you buy a piece of hardware (ie a mouse) at the same time..?"

Do you not understand the word legit...?

This is why I agree with Addy and think you're trolling... If your not, then at least spend a few minutes actually reading posts and trying to understand what they mean. And go use Google and do some research on your own.

Upgrading from 98 to Xp isn't hard. Lots of people have do it...

of course i fucking understand what the word legit means, don't be a prick. I don't care for this kind of internet bullying, its fucking pathetic. I ask for some help about computers on a fucking computer forum and get told to fuck off and use google because i'm trolling? What the hell?

Jesus, it's not as if I posted this in the cookery section!

I asked about the legit copy of windows quite obviously beause it made no sense to suggest that it was a proper version of windows being sold if you had to include some piece of hardware to get round some rule. I just wanted that to be explained. Fuck's sake, then I get accused of trolling?

The fuck?

I'm sure upgrading isn't hard. I'm sure lot's of things to do with computers aren't hard. But I am NOT A FUCKING COMPUTER EXPERT. I made that abundantly clear. Is this a fucking problem for you? Well fucking get oiver it then!

This is a computer forum. I'm so very sorry for offending your delicate internet sensibilities by asking a fucking question about computers!

lol. Don't look like you can expect much help from Jaed in the future. :D

Of course we have delicate sensibilities because we forget how we learnt it and how confusing it must be to a person of average intelligence.

That's why people hate IT.

'Average intelligence'?

So peopel who haven't learend all about computers are of 'average intelligence'? Isn't that mildly patronising?

I'm sorry but this kind of shit really pissess me off. It's childish; it's the worst kind of juvenile bullying. Someone asks for help and in response people gang up and behave like fucking children. If that's what he thinks constitutes help then he can shove it up his fucking backside because that's all it's good for. There was no need for any of this 'trolling' crap.

I'm not criticisng you, im criticisng the behaviour of the others. People who think responding to a question about legit copies with a picture of a troll is both funny and helpful.

It ain't.

I don't mind giving help to people, but if they expect it to be a free ride then they can forget it... No-one learns from being spoon-fed information. And there's this company which has made quite a good search-engine... Can't think what the url is, though... :D

Like the others who have accused you of trolling, I also suspected you might have been. Your obtuseness in relation to some aspects of IT appeared to verge on the wilful. But in the end you have to take people you don't know at face value, and that's what I did with you.

If you're doing this stuff every day, its easy to forget that what comes easy to you may not come easy to others. Its a trap we've all fallen into at one time or another.

However getting all New Joisey on their asses is a bit OTT. What's all this fuckity fuck you fucking fuck stuff ? You just watched Goodfellas ? Before they came to their trolling conclusion, both jaed and addy has been helping you. I doubt they'll be queueing up to do that again.

Sounds to me like you do mind giving people help.

This is a computers forum. What do you expect people to post? Recipes? Opinions about last night's footie?

You seem to be having some kind of problem with me asking. You respond, ghreat, then you decide to chuck your toys out the pram as if you were being held at gunpoint and forced to answer. That isn't being helpful, it's just pathetic.

Yes, I'm well aware of google, thanks. I'm not stupid and i don't need to bve condescended to either. By your logic, using that would be just as bad as asking here...a computer forum.

I'm not entirely sure why you sy 'for free' either; this is a discussion forum, not a business run by you. If you want to run a pc business then good luck to you. If you just want to be rude to me, go away.

If people can't be helpful without being rude then they are being neither.

I'm well aware how chidish people are online; doesn't mean i have to tolerate it.

I asked perfectly legitimate questions; contrary to what some people might believe I wasn't born into the borg collective and haven't learned all the technical aspects of computers - no matter how simple they might be. So i don't need to have my questions dealt with in such a juvenile manner.

And i do not care to be called a troll.

i think you have to accept that there comes a point where you have to admint that the level of knowledge you have on a topic is insufficient for you to be able to progress your query.

in IT there is a certain level of basic knowledge required before you start to learn stuff like this IYKWIM. OK if its just lobbing a programme on but this is the operating system. its the thing that makes the computer work in a manner that an average person can understand (unless you like typing machine code). fuck it up and you are just lining up trouble for yourself further down the line.

its a bit like me trying to rewire a house. I understand some bits (what colour wire is what, what a ring main is and even a fair amount of the theory on load levels etc) but there is no way I am going to attempt to rewire my house.

(i don't know whats going on here, my connection is causing my immense problems wiuth posting today).

I agree with your point. I have no problem with that at all.

It's not an excuse for being rude either.

At least Jaed and Addy managed to express their 'rude' opinions without vomiting obscenities on my screen :(

After such a gracious display, I'll wager you'll be beating techies off with a shitty stick for weeks to come.
