Xbox 360 for 99 quid.

Re, 'upgrading' by adding the HD, how straight forward is this? Is it a case of simply clipping the HD onto the 360 and the machine then recognising it for use?

I know a lot of people here like their Nintendo DS/R4 combo for playing backups etc. You've probably heard of doing similar things on a 360. If you're considering buying one with a view to modding it, do your research first.
Most 360s assembled since March this year are fitted with Liteon DVD drive which cannot be modded yet, and are not likely to be in the future.
So if you're into that sort of thing, don't rush out and get a new one. Maybe consider second hand or find some older stock.

Was this offer a con, i couldnt get one anywhere, I am thinking of complaining

nah it was a real offer from Sainsburys, I got one for my birthday, it was however only on for a week and in reality most of the units were gone within a couple of days.

You can still pick up an xbox arcade with FIFA 09 for 130 quid in Game or atleast you could on Wednesday.

May I correct you here? ;)
The Lite-On DVD drive that is present in *most* new consoles cannot be *flashed* like the previous Sansung/Hitachi/BenQ drives because the Lite-On only has a ROM (READ ONLY MEMMORY) firmware chip, whereas the others have RAM (RANDOM ACCESS MEMMORY) firmware Chips.

It was also impossible to dump the drive key of the Lite-On when it first came on the scene, but this has now been acchieved.

This now means that you can *clone* your Lite-On drive key onto a Samsung drive and be able to play copied games.

I'm also sure that a DVD Drive modchip will soon be available to do away with buying a Sammy drive to clone, and just modding the Lite-On drive.

For anyone wanting a 360, i'd suggest seeing what you can get cheap 2nd hand, remembering that even if it has the 3RROD, Microsoft increased the warranty on this failure to 3yrs which they didn't comunicate to every owner.

Fixing the 3RROD is normaly a very simple task, if you dont wish to send it back to M$ and risk it having the drive repaced with a Lite-On.

Get a 360, stick two external 500gb drives formatted to FAT32 into it and you have yourself a fab movie jukebox.

I dont even use mine for gaming anymore, it's just a DivX player, music jukebox and photo viewer.

Top bit of kit for that price. No need for a hard drive built in unless you want to download demos, it works perfectly well for gaming and as a media centre with the 256mb memory card.

Ooo, I've been wanting to do something like this for a while....got a massive DivX collection and want to have a 'jukebox' to play them off my TV.

Whats the quality like when they're output to the TV?

A lot of hassle though - soldering etc - definitely in comparison to just using Dosflash or Iprep to flash a non Liteon drive. Plus there's the additional cost of buying an older drive - maybe £40 or something.

I got lucky with my new 360 - an Elite - by checking lot numbers on boxes, which meant I got one with a Benq drive.

None of them use RAM, RAM is dynamic and cannot store any data once it's powered down. All the drives use some sort of flashable memory like EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory) or FLASHROM.

Some say the new Liteon uses ROM (which can't be flashed), others say it's possible to flash it, the problem is the host hardware will then no longer be able to read it (_yet_) :(

OTOH the old BenQ drive is child's play to flash.

I stand corrected on the RAM/EPROM confusion, but it is still possible to modify a 360 with a Lite-On drive (I wasn't trying to be pedantic)

I agree that it is easier to flash a Hitachi/Sammy/BenQ than to go the cloned drive route, but you will start to find these harder to get hold of as more boxes fail and end up back at M$ and are replaced with Lite-On's

I was lucky enough to send a RROD box back and have 1 returned with a 2008 motherboard and BenQ drive :D

And I already have a flashed Hitachi 47

Heads up for this weekend's 360 offer.

£167 at Asda for a Premium 60gb with Pro Evo 09 and Fable2.

I'm led to believe this is very cheap as thats normal price for the console alone? (Games are selling on Ebay for about £30 each posted)

I am so tempted, just can't justify having 2 consoles. Wish I could get rid of my Wii:hmm:

Right I got rid of the Wii and have a 60gb Premium with PES2009 and Dead Space. Intended both as trade ins but started playing DS now so might have to carry on.

Kids are after games now and I have a list going

GTA4
Halo 3
PGR 4
Fight Night Round 3

Any games recommended for my little un who's into superheroes?

Eldest is after either Tony Hawk or Skate, any good?

What drive had it got?
Even a brand new Xbox I would get modded.
If its a lite-on drive, get the key off it, clone a new drive MS28 - £30 off the bay (flashing = £20 - 40 mates rates - £60-80 dealers) and enjoy freebies.
That way, if you do need to do a M$ return you can put the old drive back in.
(a hairdrier is great for warranty stickers)

Pure is great.
Far cry 2 is great.
T H Proving Ground is good.
All the Lego series is good.

Cheers

Not sure on the drive, from a Pro Evo package so I'm sure it's one of the newer ones that would need swapping.

Not really in a rush to get it modded as I haven't got my head round everything with these especially the Live thing yet. I need the wireless connector for that anyway right?

After kids going through git loads of games on the Wii I'm a bit tired of them playing stuff for 10 minutes and expecting a new game, will see if they can make do with a couple of games each for now, maybe look into it after Xmas.

If it's got a lot number >0817 or a manufacture date >May then it'll have a Liteon drive unless you're very lucky.

You can use a regular ethernet cable if you don't mind a wired connection. Alternatively get the MS wireless connector (£60 but can be had for £40 or less if you shop around) or some wireless bridges work with the 360 (they're about £25).

Sure, having an almost endless supply of games devalues them.
