The barcodes have you beat though. Every disaster, every media circus, every incompetently run business, every comedy show and even every fashion crime is eclipsed by something that is going on at NUFC now. Its becoming increasingly difficult to find posting topics that are not affected by this phenomenon.

newcastle are like amy winehouse and west ham are like shola ama

A better analogy might be that Newcastle are like the Titanic, and West Ham are like the 1218 London Paddington - Frome. One may be duller than the other, but then it is compensated for that dullness by not being a complete and spectacular disaster.

Newcastle United are a bit like Audley Harrison. A lot of mouth but not much product or all mouth, no troosers.

I guess another Newcastle United comparison could be Darius from pop idol. Laughing stock, think they are massive, had a low level of success and dissapearing at a fast pace.

They're more like Oasis surely. A group stuck in the past playing to an ever diminishing bunch of hysterical loudmouth gobshites.

They gave it the Charlie big potatoes about how they were going to swagger and conquer the premiership/America/world but proved to be a bit too lazy and overrated, losing the war and coming out second best to some mockney Londoner posh boys. Now spend their time on amusing sulks and comedy whinges.

Darius is on Hotel Babylon on Friday. With Kelly Osbourne. Two giants of the entertainment world.

Newcastle are like an old, infirm badger with loads of human friends.

what is this low level of success thing? i already said why newcastle were succesful

of the 100s of clubs in england how many can fill a 50k stadium every week?

newcastle don't compare well with liverpool or man utd or arsenal but next to the villas or west hams we do pretty well

well i bet there are still lots of 13 year old lads whose dream is to play for villa or everton or toon so i think that makes them big clubs

noones dream is to play for stoke or portsmouth. when i lived in portsmouth there were more arsenal shirts than pompey shirts

So success is about bums on seats? I thought it was about winning matches and winning trophies.

Villa - won the league in the 80s, won the European cup in the 80s

West Ham - won the FA cup in the 80s

Newcastle? Nothing. Let's face facts - Coventry City and Luton Town have been more successful than you in recent times.

In terms of success, Newcastle belong in the group with Wigan, Fulham, QPR and Birmingham City.

4 Intertoto cups in the last 10 years

read em and weep

coventry, luton and portsmouth have all won cups, but none of them ever qualified for european football and hadve decent runs for about 12 years running

ok, here's another example, when i say to students that i'm from newcastle if they like football they will go 'oh! newcastle united!'

if i said i was from luton they'd say 'where's that?' i'd say 'it's next to london' and they'd say 'oh! arsenal!'

Portsmouth were in the uefa last season btw, and coventry and luton didnt get into europe after their cup wins because all english clubs were banned after Heysel.

Also i think youll find winning things generally trumps "having a decent run", however long it goes on for, though its perhaps less clear whether being a global laughing stock beats winning things when it comes to recognition.

portsmouth just won't be a big club cos they are too near to london

most people in northumberland and south tyneside are newcastle fans as well, it's like how liverpool have had fans in north wales and lancashire for generations

there were only a couple of people when i went to school who were man utd fans, pretty much everyone was toon, that just isn't the same for smaller clubs

is that before they all start walking out?

if anything newcastle fans piss me off cos they still buy tickets and never walk out however shit the club gets

it was even pretty well attended in the dark dark days of the 80s when the board wouldn't buy a roof let alone any playyers

:hmm:

it could be a friendly or that game where noone turned up cos it was a protest

if you look at the numbers, newcastle are still very well attended. i bet we are the best attended club in div1 nextseason however shit we are
