Would you get a sort of stray male cat neutered?!

I wondered if you were :) From that link you posted, I would say it's worse where you are. Yeah, there are strays & ferals here, but I wouldn't say it's on the same scale. Maybe because we have lots of animal charities (not saying there aren't in the US) who spend a lot of time and money on encouraging responsible pet ownership. :/

Not true. Just because you don't see them doesn't mean that they're not there. And it's not just confined to cities like you'd expect. The last site i was on was rife with them...the couple next door turned over a whole truck to try and 'civilise' them (for want of a better word) and caught the mum, the possible 2 dads, and 14 kittens out of 2 litters and paid for them all to be done. The farmer didn't give a fuck, just left them to breed. A load got run over as well. Wrong.

Yeah you may be right actually. I was thinking I hadn't seen many ferals since I moved to london, but when i was in a more rural area I do remember seeing plenty on farms. Mind you, that article that rainingstairs linked to differentiates between feral and farm cats, which I suppose is a valid point

Cats go round a few houses on their prowls, could well be getting fed all kinds from well meaning cat fanciers.

Yeah sure, thats definitely a possibility. My point is purely that without trying to find the owner it is wrong to go ahead and have an operation performed on it. IF there is no owner then yes you are doing a service to the community.
If for instance one of my cats dissapeared from my garden tomorrow and didn't come home me and my kid would be devastated. If it then turned up a few days later (if the de - nutter was kind enough to look after it while it recovered) I would be frigging seething that we had been breaking our hearts because some busy body had not thought to ask me first.
Anyway I am ducking out of here now, it's funny that the first time I have ever got quite cross online it is about cat balls :D

Where do you live? If you're in certain parts of London - south east or east London - then the Celia Hammond Animal Trust (CHAT) run a TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) programme for strays and ferals - the overpopulation of cats is caused by people not neutering their pets and then turning them out on the street when they start to exhibit unsavoury behaviours (urine-spraying or going into heat frequently). CHAT and other animal charities exist almost solely to deal with this problem, once the cat is neutered it will be returned to its territory but will not be a health risk (FIV & FeLV, and territorial fighting) to the local pet cat population and will not produce any more unwanted offspring. It can live out a much happier, less stressful, and safer life if it is neutered.

If the cat has an owner and they are letting it run loose unneutered then they are irresponsible fuckwit scum, putting the health of their own and other cats at risk, who don't deserve to have their shit opinions taken into consideration.

I have 3 neutered male cats and it's a very minor procedure, they are bouncing around as usual within an hour or so of coming round from the light anaesthesia.

Yes I keep thinking it's doing this - it certainly has no worries about wandering into other people's houses.

Thanks for that info Epona. I'm in NW London unfortunately so not sure if my area is covered and my vet charges about £50 for neutering male cats. I'm going to put a paper collar round its neck asking to get it neutered

It's here already ...

Yes I am listening too. I do think he can hear the radio from here though - I have double glazing :p

It seems even more reason to get him sorted doesn't it?

It's a consideration :)

I don't have an opnion on this. 1. it seems sort of rude to snatch up a random cat and have it snipped but 2. it seems a responsible kind of thing to do if you are at least 90% it's not already somebodies baby.

I agree.
If I were in you and your neighbours position I would stick some flyers up asking if the cat had an owner.
Would the people who say they would neuter a cat that does not belong to them also consider doing it to a neighbours dog without consent?
If the dog was attacking my pets and spraying foul smelling stuff all over my property then yes. Dogs are an entirely different thing though, they tend not to wander unleashed around other people's property unless they're lost. Cats can and do go where they want.

You have to be pretty thick not to realise that an un-neutered tom cat is going to be agrressive and spraying. Therefore the owners are either irresponsible or don't care. Either way it justifies having the cat neutered on their behalf.

Nice line, but I prefer
Don't castrate cats without consent, you cunt :D
If it is definitely a stray it would be different obviously.
:)
Do you think it's ok for people to own an animal that goes into other peoples houses and sprays or attacks their pets? Have you ever smelled tom cat spray? Have you ever tried to get rid of it? If they want to keep their tom cat intact they should keep it in.

I still think its completely out of order. What if there were a complication while he was having the procedure and the cat died? there might be a family agonising over their missing pet.
They should have got it neutered themselves, then! :D

Clair, what if the owners are found and they still don't get the cat neutered? The important question is why this tom is still intact. The one that's coming to my house isn't a stray and isn't young but I can't find out who it belongs to so as soon as I can catch it it's getting the chop.

It's pretty difficult to find out who it belongs to apart from doing the note round the neck thing. I live on a street with semi-detached houses on two sides and blocks of flats on the other two. Not only could it have come from any one of those but it could feasibly have come through any one of the gardens into mine. My garden's 120 ft long so it's not like I can even tell where it's coming in.

I do think it's rude to neuter someone else's cat but on the other hand I am pretty worried about the cat coming in during the summer and I know he will spray - it's what toms do. I can't keep the door shut with a toddler and cats of my own, it's not fair on them.

I'd do the note round the neck thing and if that doesn't work, THEN look at getting it neutered.

As much as anything else, it's their responsibility, not yours, so I think the first course of action should be to encourage them to fulfil this responsibility, not take it up for them.

It's so hellish to get rid of the smell too. The cat we had problems with sprayed all over a coir runner in our hall and in the downstairs loo. You could smell tomcat before you opened our garden gate. The woman next door had a similar problem. It sprayed all over the toy box in her sitting room (she's a childminder). She had to ditch loads of toys and I had to ditch the runner. An expensive business.

What about aftercare, they're supposed to be kept in afterwards aren't they? Are you or your neighbour going to keep this cat in and take the day off work to keep an eye on complications?

I totally understand where you're coming from and I know it's tempting but I really do think it's out of order.

Good idea :)

I wouldn't take it upon myself to neuter someone elses pet without their permission, but until you can be clear of ownership it's a tricky one. :(

But what if they don't get it done? Then I've got this cat coming into my house all summer long :(

It's annoying because I'm going to have to get all friendly with the cat to put a paper collar round its neck and then it's going to think I want it in the house when I don't.

Why can't people be a bit more fucking responsible

sparklefish - if I got it neutered, I would obviously look after it until it was okay again. I'm doing this because I do actually care about cats - I'm hardly going to spend £50 and then abandon it!

yeh I seee your point, you can grab it, take it to the vets, check for chip etc and discuss it with your vet?

Or you could try putting up 'found' posters to try and get hold of the owner that way, if they don't respond you can take it to a recue and let them deal with it. :)

Actually I might do that first. Then the cat will hate me a lot for sticking it in a box so might not want to hang around. He has formed a 'friendship' with one of my cats though  My cats are right suckers for boys

Sorry not been back on this thread till now.
Yes of course they should get it neutered.
If she finds the owners and tells them the problem and they still don't get it done I think she should still tell them she plans to do it.
You are in the country Madz aren't you? surely its not that hard to find the owner of your problem tom?

Why would it be easier to find the owner in the country? :D
