Would you buy a pedigree?

My next dog will be a lurcher and although not pedigree, I will know what the parents and grandparents look like and what sort of temperament they have.

I dog walk two lurchers now and again and they are the lovliest gentlest things.

I never really fancies a big dog as I thought they'd get in the way but it's nice to know I wont tread on them :D

I've been looking after a pure Boxer dog for a while, her owner is away. She's about two years old, and quite lovely. Gonna miss her - she goes back today.

Before looking after her was not so into pedigrees. She cost £500 - and I have to say she's worth every penny. She's very sound and not at all highly-strung, as pedigrees seem to have a propensity to being.

Prior to meeting this dog, I was always in favour of mongrels and crosses. My experience says they tend to be brighter, healthier, easier to train.

However, this animal has changed my view - she's great fun and so full of character. (Also sooo much energy, but then that is what Boxer's are renowned for).

So I'd definitely pay for a Boxer. I would also buy a Wolfhound, as they are also wonderful dogs.

Saying that,my last own dog was a fabulous friend, a wolfhound/lurcher cross on one side, and every dog in Hackney on the other. She was the bee's-knees. But the Boxer has taken a near second place in my affection.

I'd willingly take in a greyhound; happily home a mongrel, and dig into my pocket for a Boxer or Wolfhound. I'm not so hot on little dogs, they can be great friends, but I like the somewhat bigger presence of a larger animal (that sounds a little tautological, I mean something other than size).

For me, the thing really is, wherever the dog comes from, I prefer bitches (cleaner, easier to train, fewer leader of the pack problems, often smarter); mongrels (hardier, smarter, more balanced personality more often than not) and do like to take the runt of the litter (smarter, though often smaller and can be a little illness-prone at first - but always smarter, as they had to struggle harder for food).

But dogs are great. Thinking of fostering them for a bit, you know, looking after them between homes.

I <Insert Heart Emoticon here> Dogs.

So have you paid for a pedigree and if so why or are you a sucker for the underdog or cat?
My parents have kept several Labradors over the years and they tend to buy dogs where both the parents look like Labradors but lack the paper work. They tend to be working dogs, gun dogs, and the crosses are done some way back in their lineage to produce dogs that are more focused, have sleaker coats, better legs & hips (which are a problem for all big dogs) and calmer temperaments. Kennel Club rules are all about what the dog looks like and don't care if the animal is skittish or an air head which if you are going to keep the animal in your house is frankly more important.

I think staffs are lovely dogs, when I went to the dogs trust to get my dog last year there was 3 year old staff there that I was really tempted by but at the end of the day I really would'nt want a dog that was worth a lot of money,I'd be too worried about him getting stolen. There seems to have been a spate of dog thefts around here recently. Just this weekend there was someone putting up posters on our estate offering a reward for their stolen staffie:(

Was reading in paper about this-rocketed 500% in last few years or something-some dogs are sold, others are used for dogfighting or the thieves demand a ransom:mad:
Look out dog people (although been happening to pedigree cats as well)
