would anything bring about a revolution in the uk?

In total agreement.

So - do I have to live my life according to the rules of the ringtone listening zombies?

No way. Instead of worrying about what others are doing, or thinking of you, or thinking of themselves, let's just get on and change the world. Let's stop interpreting it. Yes, our society is in a mess. My question is: where is the soap? And the water? And who is up for rolling up the sleeves and cleaning up?

Actually he has a point there - major upheavals tend to occur when people's basic material interests seem to be threatened. Hence look at the Poll Tax resistance and the recent revolt in France - both about perceived threats to basic material interests.
Now unless we believe that global warming is not happening or will have no effect, unless we believe that the continuing trajectory of Indian and Chinese development is only going to have beneficial effects on Western economies and the living standards of Western workers, unless we believe that George Dubya is going to gradually withdraw from all the overstretch that is going to run the US economy onto the rocks, and unless we believe that the "long boom" is now permanent and there will never be any recessions or depressions (in effect unless we are a totally rose tinted spectacle Panglossian) then it is self evident that the current relative comfort zone of the sleeping giant of the British working class is a temporary affair.
Whether the end of this "comfort zone" - (the J curve of unmet aspiration, to use the political jargon) results in radical upheavals or vicious reaction (or both!) is the only serious question........... ;)
