Wot no Marxism 2008 thread?

Class struggle is at a low ebb but is rising with increased strikes across the public sector,
Token last gasps (brought about by long-standing activists making a lot of noise) that'll simply be ignored until they run out of steam. Which I suspect won't be long.

I recall reading Raymond Williams who described the working class being a collective culture and the middle and ruling class as being individualised, this no longer seems to be true.

I have to agree. In fact, I'd say the situation was now reversed: the middle and upper classes now all stick together like glue whilst the working classes are in a terrible state of individualistic, dog-eat-dog mentality. Just watch what happens when you raise a grievance at work - the bosses will all connive to get their story straight (I:E; deny everything) to the letter and will back each other up to the hilt - whilst the rest of your colleagues all bury their head in the sand and pretend not to have witnessed whatever it is your greivanceis is against (usually a bullying manager).

The union movement here is unsalvageable and unusable. Pretty much defunct and serves no real purpose apart from providing a career for union officials.[/QUOTE]

How do you account for recent strikes in Argos and recognition battles in call centres new industries with no history of union organisation, Capitalism continues to create its own gravediggers.
