Very much enjoyed today but I think Worthing might be in complete freefall. I get freaked out when Gav makes a defensive substitution when we're well on top. Just seems like it sends a message.

To be honest, i'm pretty pissed and bored on the train home. I'm not even that interested in what you think. Still, only an hour until home now.

A win and a clean sheet!!
I think we missed a few chances, some of the one on ones with the goalie should have been tucked away instead of passing the ball.
They cleared a couple off the line.

Dipo took his goal well with a slight bend on the shot from where I was standing.
If we had taken the chances then it wouldn't have been a nervey last 5/10 minutes with Darge giving away a freekick in a good position near the end. Luckily there setplay guy wasn't on target.
Also there number 11 was lucky not to get a card!

Another classic one goal thrashing dished out by the Hamlet. Which of course is preferable to the many "how did we not win that one?" drawn games that we've dominated this season.

Much of the first half was fairly nondescript as Hamlet monopolised possession for long spells without really threatening to score. I don't think the pitch helped. I'm fairly ambivalent towards 3G pitches - I'd rather have a nice grass pitch, but I recognise the advantages of 3G, and after several postponements since the turn of the year it was nice to be able to travel without worrying about a game being washed out or frozen off. However there seems to be a considerable variation between one such surface and another; whilst I never really noticed the pitch on our visits to Maidstone, Worthing's seemed strangely bobbly, the ball didn't run at all smoothly, and often seemed to 'stick' under players' feet. The best first half chances came when a deep cross from the right was volleyed back across goal by Sekajja and hacked off the line by a covering defender, then a close range header nodded just over the bar by Green from close range after a shot into the ground bounced up for him.

Hamlet were on fire at the start of the second half, and within sixty seconds Akinyemi bagged the game's only goal by getting free inside the box to the right and beating Kieron Thorp, Phil Wilson's original predecessor as Hamlet keeper back in 2009, with a hard low shot inside the far post. We could have been out of sight within the next ten or fifteen minutes as a string of clear chances fell mostly to Sekajja. They weren't dreadful misses, and he got all his shots on target, but he's simply not an insinctive goalscorer; he just seems to deliberate for a fraction too long before pulling the trigger. A couple of times Thorp closed him down and smothered his shot, on one occasion he took the ball too wide and was shut out, and on another when a goal seemed certain a defender flung himself full length to block the shot. A cross from Akinyemi narrowly missed going straight in at the far post, and Weatherstone had a header cleared off the line at a corner. As usual the clumsy and unnecessary fouls inside our own half began to creep in towards the end, and we had to defend two free kicks from out wide during stoppage time. Worthing posed little attacking threat in open play and were a complete contrast to the confident (if defensively naive) team that visited Champion Hill a few months back, when I thought they were one of the most potent attacking sides I've seen this season.

Beaney was suspended for accumulated bookings, and will also now miss the Macclesfield replay.

Team (3-4-1-2): Edwards - Weatherstone(c), Drage, Taylor - Ming, Kargbo, Carew, Green - Tomlin - Akinyemi, Sekajja. Subs: Dumaka (for Sekajja), Mascoll (for Akinyemi), Mohamed, Chambers, Erskine (not used), Att.763

Apparently the pitch is going to be replaced in the summer at the cost of £16K

Agree. Based on a conversation I had with the Maidstone chairman, the average cost of replacement without installing a new sub-base is around £100-150,000.

Worthing should get ten points docked - minimum - for such a disgustingly coloured pitch.

Probably just remedial works to improve it rather than a completely new installation. They've only had it for a year or two, haven't they?

It looks like there's a rectangular running track around the pitch. I quite like the idea of watching a 400m hurdles race on a track with the corners at right angles. Make track athletes run around a football pitch for a change, instead of us having to watch games in the middle of an oval running track where you're miles from the action behind the goals at places like Hornchurch.

It's a completely new installation at Maidstone and was more expensive than the average because they didn’t go out to tender due to time constraints and also because they’ve had to install a new sub-base which you wouldn’t normally do until after 4 or 5 pitch replacements.

Actually, I'm going off Worthing a bit. They've got some right po-faced types on Twitter who have taken personal offence at my lack of love for their ludicrous red pitch!

He didn't like me describing the lurid red pitch as lurid. Such a sensitive chap. Love the royal "we", mind. Always adds gravitas to a whining tweet.

I love the fact the wait for his drinks at Champion Hill has gone from 25 minutes to 45 minutes in just a few tweets.

Certainly no overly-sensitive types at Champion Hill, right?

I'm sure there are but they rarely take to Twitter for an extended moan-a-thon at opposing fans for expressing a fairly non controversial opinion (i.e. that a bright red fake pitch is a lurid offering to the eyes). But he's added in a whine about the bar wait at Champion Hill now as well, as I'm sure that's related. Somehow.
