Worst vegetarian food?

after reading this thread i am going to have tofu next week a big plate of all for myself mmm. GG what is the stock like that you need to make that thingy you were saying about it sounded yummy.

Am about to have chips and curry sauce for tea- not overly healthy but sort of veggie :)

There's a recipe here for tsuyu: http://japanesefood.about.com/od/saucecondiment/r/sobatsuyu.htm

most of the major recipes are here too:
http://japanesefood.about.com/library/recipe/blrecipe_indextofu.htm

You can just have cold tofu with soy sauce though. Tsuyu is more commonly used with soba noodles. God this is making me hungry... :(

You can buy tsuyu from the shops. Most of them, however, contain fish stock, so if you want it to be veggie you'll need to make it yourself. You can buy shiitake dashi (stock). When you get tempura you usually get it with tsuyu to dip. In the UK they tend to make it veggie or in the better Japanese restaurants (like Matsuri) they'll serve it with salt. :)

(ETA.. I think you're in Brixton right? They sell fresh tofu in Wing Tai and I think some dipping sauces too. Brixton Wholefoods have some lovely flavoured tofu as well as some organic tofu - both very firm so they can be cooked without draining first).

There's also a guy in Borough market who sells absolutely gorgeous tofu. One plain and two flavoured varieties.

gaijin girl those tofu reciepes are like goldust to me! cheers:D
i love crispy tofu and didnt know how to make it at home(tried before it it just crumbled:o )..i will try this out..will serve to my freinds over xmess i think:D

the thing is with tofu and also TVP is they are flavourless by their nature..but good for you, very high protein!
its all down the sauce you serve with it..
if you put TVP in a tomato sauce with loads of garlic and fresh basil it will be nice..the granules are better than the big chunks..
same with tofu..the right dipping sauce with it and you are in heaven!

lots of people dont want to take time with cooking esp if cooking for one..hence the popularity of quorn products..convience!!!
its not cos we all miss burgers/bacon:mad:
opinions vary how much these "meat replacement" products taste like meat anyway..
IMHO quorn burgers/sausages are far better than lindas mc c's ever were..
i love quorn burgers/fakey bacon and back when i ate meat as a teenager i "only" ate chicken/fish never beef/pork,hated burgers/bacon in fact..its bacon FLAVOUR i like..not sure bacon from a pig tastes like the chemicals in fakey bacon:confused:

i think dale pack grills should WIN worst veggie food EVER! they are fatty and taste awful!some own brand veggie burgers are not all that nice either..tho ediable if you are starving..those dale pack things BRRRGGGHHHH,id rather fast ..anything breaded..VILE!

I quite like all that dalepack stuff...

After spending a week at my veggie mate's and eating really nice made from scratch veggie food and quorn and lindA mccartney stuff (both of which I thought were quite nice) I stopped eating cheap, nasty processed meat and only eat meat (always decent stuff) once or so a week and have 'veggie' fare the rest of the time.

oh and coleslaw is lurvely- especially made yourself with some brocolli thrown in

Bearbot, that is exactly right.
I would have thought that one of the major reasons someone would choose to become a vegetarian was the health benefits, so I really don't understand veggies who live almost exclusively on salty, fatty, vitamin and mineral deficient convenience foods, especially when actual vegetables are tasty and easy to cook.
Oh and btw, I'm not very experienced in the mysterious ways of tofu, but after gaijingirl and shelley's suggestions, I'm going to go and buy some tomorrow.
ETA: I'm all for coleslaw too. Fried rice and coleslaw is the best come home drunk food ever.

The thing with flavour in tofu.. to our Western palettes it's true it seems tasteless - but in Japan food tends to be far more subtle with flavours and Japanese people can taste the difference in flavours of rice and tofu made in different areas of the country. Akita rice, for example, is particularly valued. In this country although we can get tofu, it is a pitiful sample of what is available in Japan. There is a myriad of ways of producing it and byproducts such as okara or yuba.
Kitsune udon/soba is udon/soba noodles in a hot soup served with a slice of aburaage (thinly sliced and fried tofu) on top. Inari zushi is those little pillows of sweetened tofu stuffed with rice you get at sushi restaurants.

Both kitsune and inari are references to Inari (the Shinto God of rice and the fox (kitsune) which is a sort of magical agent and closely associated with Inari) - difficult to explain really but even now, at least rurally, Japanese mothers will warn their children against foxes - which can also take human form. (Something I'm sure that Shippou-chan knows all about). In fact there is this idea that they will take the form of beautiful women.... :D Whenever I have friends visiting from Japan they are always completely fascinated by the foxes which live out in my back garden.

A really popular dish in China (and Japan) is mapou dofu - which is hot and spicy but is usually served in a minced meat sauce.

I personally would have thought that main reason to be veggie is so not to be part of the cruelty of the meat system not for health reasons. I do eat a lot of unhealthy veggie food though...

amusingly enough inarizushi is my favourite type of sushi .... however unfortunately my attempt to make kitsune soba (i had some soba i didn't know what to do with so i though it would be a laugh) was only slightly better than my attempt to make okonomiyaki (think re-entry heat sheliding)

(i am the anti-cook)

I loathe pretend meat of any description - tvp, soya mince, quorn - urgh. My stomach and brain don't believe that it isn't meat and heave accordingly - I think it's the texture or something. Tofu reminds me of cold pork fat..I had golden tofu in a Japanese restaurant once, which was just about edible, but reminded me of the suet stuff around a steak and kidney pudding.

The worst veggie meal I ever had was in the old Atlantic bar in Leicester Sq - starter - deep fried onion as big as your head. Main course - deep fried onion as big as your head and chips.

They probably do that as a joke to see who will fall for it. Pretty good if I must say.
Oh God yes. :(

Most veggie sausages are really nice too, what do they put in it?

Vegetable protein, salt, herbs/spices, flavourings

worst vegetarian food? Linda McCartney sausages.
Fuck i ate one of those ten years ago and i can still taste it!!!
Tastes like Birmingham.

What a surprising bump! And yes, Linda McCartney sausages are indeed foul. Like fatty dry mechanical fingers:(
