The biggest crime a football commentator can make is to say what they want to see rather than what is actually occurring. Add to this making endless pre-prepared gushing comments about star players / previous events and it's all just non-sense, just shut up and commentate on what you are actually seeing at the moment, and yes ITV I'm talking about you at the moment.
Special shout going out to Motty, someone who's commentary skills peaked in 1972 with the Hereford v Newcastle game. These days it's like being sat next some senile old bloke at the ground.
A typical Motson TV commentary these days ...
... striker beats two players and lashes one from 25 yards beats the keeper all ends up and smacks the post....
[Motson] I say what happened there?... some people may say that may have hit the post ....

the two blokes commentating on the Ski Cross at the Olympics yesterday were pretty rubbish. both shouting over each other and trying to out do each other on making errors and then pointing them out to the other one

Did you hear the male/female commentary team for the snowboard - she was a Norwegian snowboarder who didn't seem to know the mike was on, and he didn't seem to recognise what he was meant to describe.
Think Sally Gunnell.
Or Hana Mandlikova analysing Wimbledon.
Or Cathy Freeman when she did the Olympics - was she a record for binning or was that Gazza as an itv studio pundit?
