Worst sport commentator?

Ian Botham isn't the worst but he brings absolutely nothing to the party, as it were.

'They'll get a couple of runs there.'

'He didn't pick that ball.'

'That ball went straight past him.'

Say what you see, Beefy, say what you see.

Aye, his mate Viv Richards is pretty rubbish as well. The ultimate toughguy of sports psychology on the field, bit of a prattler off it.

Yep, Michael Johnson is very good, not quite in the same league as John McEnroe but he's the best summeriser I've ever known.

Shame the BBC can only get him for the first week of Wimbledon before he transfers to the USA broadcaster.

Yes, I Forgot Macenroe. Always thought he was a pratt, not just for his playing antics, but also his chatshow performances. Seems to have grown up a bit in the last few years. He's not only witty, but manages to lightly take the piss out of the rather dull Brit commentators without being too vicious.

Actually, that was Fred Truman's style as well. Startling revelations like "well, they need to score more runs if they want to win this match" - along with repeated cries of "well! I don't believe it".

Most knowledgeable and insightful about a sport I've ever known anyone to be. Doesn’t overwhelm you, but educates all the way.

I'm warming to this now:

Jonathan Agnew is good at the bland joviality, but could do with at least a mini-slap. 'Practical jokes'.

i'll nominate garry herbert (the one who wept when he won gold as cox at the 92 olympics) and who shouts incomprehensibly as a commentator.. mind you it doesn't ruin my rowing excitement..

Turning the thread on its head, Michael Johnson is a brilliant summariser on the athletics. Straight to the point, really good on any controversies, tough without being ranty etc. I was amazed when i saw how good he was. For years I only ever heard him speak in the run up to championships, sounding very bored/bland. Probably the 20th interview he'd done that day, each asking if was going to break the record, if anybody could challenge him etc.
Yes, agree totally. He's as faultless off the track as on. I remember one reply he gave which was so eloquent I could hardly believe he was producing it in real time.

That fat cunt Alan Green, he's a cock who's always having a dig at United, I don't mind that so much, it's the fact the cowardly fat fuck won't come out and admit what everyone else knows, that he's a Liverpool supporter.

Yeah I think what annoys me more about Green is that he always has to have an opinion on something always has to convey his 'definitiive' thoughts on something even though he regularly ends up being wrong and even though there is a summariser next to him to do that job. No class whatsoever. Makes me yearn for Peter Jones or Brian Moore.

not a commentater but for analysis ian wright has got to be the biggest prick going.

Jamie Redknapp runs him pretty close in the uselessness stakes.

The only thing that tips 'Wrighty' over the edge is his bitterness at anyone who doesn't pick his son.

Apparently that's all England need to do to piss all over the next world cup, play Shaun Wright-Phillips :D

Sooo many times people accuse him of this and one time I heard him say that he was in fact, if anything, a Macclesfield fan as that's where he lives.

I really like him because he gives no quarter. If your a supposed top team and playing shit, he will say your playing shit....you probably just remember the criticisms more because you're a fan of the team he is criticising. I've heard Liv fans call him a Manc fan and Manc fans call him a Liv fan.

He's the best for me on the radio by a country mile. Likewise for England games if Eng are playing crap he says so, I like his impartiality and the fact he will not give deference to any club just because of who they are.

Whenever Wrighty Jr played badly for England it musta been hard for the other sumerisers sitting next to Wrighty Sr to express an opinion on his performance:D

"What is going on out there Christopher?"

"What.
Is.
Going.
On?"

Quite right about Michael Johnson and McEnroe. Johnson treads a very delicate line between indulging the Brits' parochialism and injecting a bit of realism into proceedings. Does so very skilfully.

There are too many awful ex-pros in football and cricket punditry to mention. Having played at the top level doesn't on its own qualify you as a commentator.

Oh and Fred Truman was fucking dreadful. A not-in-my-day arsehole.

I don't thnk he is impartial, I think he is very much partial to himself, he rushes to quick judgements dismissing players or teams or performances then does everything to justify those statements even when they are proved incorrect. I'd rather have a commentator who commentates, I find him negative and slightly depressing to be honest. He's one who seems to think he is as important as the game itself and those who are actually proffessionals within it. His 'spat' with Alex Ferguson, despite being petty on both sides, irritates me because Green always brings it up as if Ferguson is lies awak at night thinking about Green...really mate you're not that important.

Definately this. I much prefer hearing a journalist talk about football with something a bit considered to say or at least being able to communicate effectively what they mean.

The new F1 twat. The only good thing about it is Brundle telling him he's an idiot via a lot of sighs, and an aggravted tone of voice.

Not eaxcatly a commentator but pundit John 'what's the North of England?' Inverdale is a complete cockend. Partridge incarnate.

Green. Because his commentaries are actually minute by minute updates on Alan Green's opinion of his own ego, while occasionally some chaps play football in the background. I've heard him whinge because supporters are standing up when it gets exciting, and then spend the rest of the game complaining about his seat.

I WANT TO HEAR ABOUT THE FOOTBALL YOU USELESS TWATPOT!

Ian Darke - the Sky boxing commentator.

The worst boxing commentator of all time. He sounds like a dalek struggling to do a shit. Every contest he commentates on is a better fight than Hagler v Hearns.

He gets moist when a boxer punches arms or gloves. It's fucking embarrassing at times. It's like watching boxing with a pissed uncle that hasn't a fucking scooby.

Carpenter or Guttridge were on a different planet.

Yep this was what I was trying to say, but you did a much better job of it!

I quite like Alan Green.

Stand tall and shout from the rooftops.....I agree with you.

He gives you commentary that makes you feel your there.

'That guy cost 20million and he can't hit a barn door'
'Some idiot just stood up in front of me'
'Ooo what a great pass'
'That was a blatant penalty!'

I like.

I'm not so sure about him on 6-0-6 after the game. There he seems to largely agree with whoever phones up and won't be as judgemental as he is about a game.

See that is exactly what I don't want from a commentator...maybe I am a bit old school though :(

its a fierce rivalry between the MotoGP idiots on the BBC (except for Suzi ofc) and the non- MotoGP idiots on Eurosport.

edit: the Colin Edwards save they refer to
