worst musical genre... EVER!

I hate to say it but it's a colour thing. Anyone who wasn't white wouldn't touch that crap with a bargepole. They were too busy listening to late ska, early rap, motown etc. whilst that 80's crap was being whined out. I'm not being racist btw.

and that's where you're wrong - read interviews with many of the (black) pioneers of house music and they'll reel off a massive list of their influences, much of which is early eighties synth based pop.

Derrick May

Racist generalization, post reported.

Worst genre of music: Trance

"trance" is a bit vague though ...
I have a soft spot for Oakenfold's "Voyage Into Trance" comp - it wouldn't do much for me on the dancefloor these days, but I used to cycle to that (10 years on I'm 3 stone heavier and it's more likely to be german lounge :o )

(Yes I know - annoying Superstar DJ too)

You may not be racist, but you're certainly an idiot. Human League, New Order, Depeche Mode, Gary Numan etc were all massively influential on the original Detroit techno bods like Juan Atkins, Derrick May etc...all black people.

Damn, beaten to it!

To anyone who slates trance- I dare you to listen to Gatecrasher Wet Disc 2 (I think).. I too have a healthy hate for commercial, dutch, euro, cheesy or boring trance, but clearly there are some gems in that genre! Nothing wrong with a wee bit of euphoria in the right place :p I could say a similar thing about hard dance subgenres .... but... I don't want to be flamed :( ;)

Oh and the worst genre is syrupy commercial arr n bee ... or maybe christian punk, a terrifying prospect

Gabba. Pointless noise.

you've summed it up nicely, maybe that's why people listen to it, it's kinda the end of music the primal bastard car siren riddim, well, i dunno, it still seems to be a massive influence on todays post-hardcore scene.

Ok, so you're not going to listen to that disc... I didn't really expect u to be open minded enough :p and I guess gabba is fairly indefensible... but I still love some of it... Listen to Romper Stomper DJ Mix by Liza N Eliaz, I challenge you to not like at least a fifth of it! :p

I've heard enough trance to last me a lifetime thanks.

La, la, la, I can't hear you. You're just winding me up.

You made that site impressively quickly, though...
One day, christians (or maybe even muslims) will discover gabba. :(

(inspired by the jamiroquai thread)

obviously blind prejudice and meaningless generalisations shall rule this thread... if there's a consensus over a dozen genres maybe we can have a thread.

to get the ball rolling...

acid jazz

I was going to nominate that, damn you!

It is the worst genre ever!

In my first year at Uni (mid 90s) everyone just used to go on about annoying bands like Corduroy and the James Taylor Quartet. Fucking tossy wanky shite for people too unimaginative to listen to anything that doesn't tell them exactly how to think.

"Hey aren't we so groovy! And funky! We're listening to Acid Jazz!"

Soft rock/mor, psy-trance, rnb. All shite

I'm upset by the nomination of Thrash Metal, I quite like Slayer, Megadeth, early Metallica etc :p

Likewise 'all dance music'. The decription given of it doesn't match dnb for a start

And gentlegreen, happy hardcore is good *plays extended Hixxy mix at gentlegreen* :p

I tried to get into it because of the friendliness of the scene but never could - much in the same way I tried almost every salsa class in Bristol.
I think it's an introvert / extrovert thing ...

You clearly have no idea what you are talking about - the likes of New Order, Human League and Kraftwerk were heavily influential on many black producers of the 80s and 90s

Herbie Hancock played on Hunter and The Hunted by Simple Minds innit.

Top song IMHO. The Herbie bit is particularly good.

Erm didn't most of the early (black) Detroit techno crew explicitly acknowledge their debts to the likes of the Human League and New Order.

(Oh everyone else has already said dat! :o )
