worst ethnic music and instruments

I'd go with those things that Australian aborigines blow into

didgeridoo

I find them annoying too

Ooh, I agree, I hate wind chimes, they're so annoying. A neighbour had some on a balcony and I could hear them at night when I was trying to get to sleep. His bedroom was on the other side of the building.

Could have been worse, they could have had an Aeolian harp, which can sound downright eerie when the wind is blowing "right".

largely i think ANY instrument CAN sound good:D..its down to who the individual player is/what they expressing and who they are playing with too

as a full spectrum music lover i cant write off any instrument/style totally..
like that doctor roket track on you tube..its such an unexpected use of accordian! its fab when instruments arent used the contexts you've heard them used over and over again

the vocals in chinese opera can take some getting used to i agree!
i just try to focus on the spectacle /costumes which kinda make up for them..(to an extent)

matt m..any link so i can hear osafro samba?
im sure i would love it as im a big harry parch/gamelan fan and also like aspects of
os mutantes a lot..thanks!

I'd rather listen to some big Scotsmen with cheeks puffed out like blowfish busting several bloodvessels wheezing into some pigs bladders than, say, the whiny, anaemic squeakings of Thom Yorke or the preppy nasal drawl of that cossetted comedy-student-music cunt Jeffery Lewis.

I was talking about harry partch and gamelan in relation to chinese opera, not 'Os Afro Sambas'.

But if you like Os Mutantes stuff, I'm sure you'd like Os Afro Sambas - it's a really, really, really good album. It's kind of like a folkier, slightly more traditional Brazilian version of what Os Mutantes did. (Although on reflection, not that much more traditional...) You gotta watch out though, because Baden Powell re-recorded the whole album in the 1990s, god knows why, so when you look on Amazon and other shops, you have to make sure end with the proper 1960s album.

I think there are some sound clips here:

you mean berimbaus? I think they have a lovely sound, kind of like a more ritualistic and haunting version of a Jew's harp. Check out the 1960s album Os Afro Sambas by Vinicius de Moraes & Baden Powell for some righteous berimbau. (It's one of the best albums ever made anyway, a mix of 60s psych pop, sugary bossa, Afro-Brazilian santeria ritual and quasi-Gregorian chant. It's like a more focussed and less 'wacky' Os Mutantes. Like Herb Alpert died and was resurrected as a voodoo Zombie black nationalist militant.)

*pops over to bittorrent*:D

matt..thanks for the link..yup i get that you were comparing os muentes to os afro sambas not partch/gamelan..there are so quite a few meeting points between gamelan and partch(havent read his bio yet,,its sitting here waiting for me:D)and chinese opera..i just am not being very clear today, as im exhausted.

is it me..weak huh?:p

i just try to keep an open mind about music ..i sometimes do have the ability to focus on certain things that move me and ignore the things that dont( this varies according to who the artist is/style of music etc)

ive had a similiar experience with "western opera"
its not a style of music i normally would get into to but the one time i attended an opera the spectacle/costumes were AMAZING!
its a theatrical performance you can lose yrself in..its not JUST about the music..

same with chinese opera..listening to it at home..is 1 level of experience
seeing a live performance..a much RICHER experience

havent seen chinese opera yet there was one on at SOAS last year(free),
heard about it after it happened..

i like chinese classical music but i can't get away with any type of opera, except the really good obvious stuff like carmen and the odd tune from other bits and pieces

and someone was saying everyone hates pan pipes cos they haven't heard proper peruvian music

i've heard proper peruvian music
it's just a fucking racket

Fucking bongos played by fucking hippies on fucking beaches in fucking Goa.

HaHa!!!

Yes we are

In fact, according to Islington Council we are a recognised "Enthic Minority" so.....

"Step away from the insult Sir, step away.....";)

No insult, but I would love to see the justification and the basis upon which such a judgement was made. Especially given the fact that you cite Islington Council..........

:)

We english made slaves of the scots before ever a boat sailed to african shores from this fair isle etc etc the english are bastards etc:D
