No, they were shit. If they had been good because they were rubbish they would have been good and not shit, but they weren't, they made cock-awful music that nobody would ever want to listen to. And they did try to be serious.
 
I never got the clash, back in the day - there was too much other stuff going on that was less arty /whatever

You obviously never saw them live then. Two single best gigs I've ever seen. Bristol Colston Hall June 1980, Bristol Locarno June '82. No band I've ever seen before or since has come near to the intensity of either of those two concerts. That's why people of my age go all misty eyed about them.
