Cauldron foods are brilliant, full stop. The only substitutes I'll generally buy for myself (I do eat others though when they're already bought). The sausages are made out of tofu mainly I think. The mushroom pate is lush!

I think I also have tried the nut cutlets for Tesco which people are showing admiration for. Can't remember too much what they were like but I think I liked them.

Sains glam leek sausies - stick em in the oven and they go a bit firm on the outside. Grill em and they mush.

Forgot to say the sains hot dogs are groovy aswell with onions, mustard etc...

Yeah, but onion gravy is dead easy to make from scratch - I do it twice a week by the huge panful (in winter, no need for gravy on the salads, eh).
You only need an onion and a clove of garlic, bit of marmite, stock cube, can of ale or glass of wine, bit of flour and some butter. Takes 15 mins. Yum. Even better with some wholegrain mustard in it. And some celery and a bay leaf. Black pepper too, goes without saying. Red onions are good, and if you can use the water from boiling up some spuds, carrots tec then so much the better. Best the next day too when it's been in the fridge.

Errrm.... OTT? Bisto is quick i suppose....
 
:) I make a wicked homemade gravy too with marmite,butter, peanut butter, veg water and seasoning and its very easy,, but i shall try to make your onion gravy soon Foggypane coz it sounds very nice indeed,
I dont like oxo or bisto, it seems to leave a film on the roof of my mouth that lasts for ages and spoils my dinner, :(
 
And crumble up a mushroom in it.

Chop the onions all different sizes so that the little pieces caramelise (or 'burn', as the ill informed would have it) whilst the big ones are still quite raw. You get the full range of oniony flavours then.

Now I live in Thailand I can't get any fake meat. I actually just used to buy it 'cos the aother half's not a veggie and wanted something meaty. My cookings certainly improved without always using fake meat though it certainly saves time being able to some processed food sometimes. I'd kill for some quorn sausages and tomato ketchup right now.
Linda Mc Cartney sausages and burgers just seem to dry and tasteless.
Tofu here is horrible, they don't ever cook it enough.

Quorn is made from Fusarium mould, which is a pretty potent mycotoxin & linked with all sorts of allergies & serious adverse reactions. It is also made by industrial bulk-fermentation before being pasteurised (because it is bloody dangerous before) & processed into its final form.

Fusarium venenatum is a fungus actually a mold from which a mycoprotein can be derived, this is used in the manufacture of Quorn. The mycoprotein used in Quorn can be gastrotoxic causing severe vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea in susceptible individuals.

Never mind that bulk frementation itself is a technology largely derived from industrial pharmachutecials & bio-warfare. In this current world of industrialised/mechanised agriculture & food prodution, you would be hard-pressed to find any food more artificial & processed than quorn. Eggs aside, it hardly fits-in with any sensible definition of vegetarianism that I've come across.

Quorn doesnt get sold here in Germany for some reason (or I haven't found it) but I dont really miss it. Best veggy processed food has to be Tempeh, I love the stuff.
 
:) I have long term Gastritis(inflammation of the tummy-not down to quorn) ,it took a yr or so, before i sort of connected that when i ate quorn, it would aggravate my gastritis, giving me tummy cramps etc, and now after reading pogofish's post, I will not be buying quorn again,,
I am now a Cauldron fan thanks to this thread, and i love the sausages,
One has to wonder why i never tried them before, are they really tofu? coz i've never fancied tofu, any way the sausages are lovely :)

what is the difference between Tempeh and Tofu?
I can never get hold of Tempeh, always sold out in Fresh and Wild.

How do you cook and prepare it?
 
I'm quite partial to a good veggie processed protein sandwich slice thing, but I've just tried tried the Squeaky Bean salami slices:

And they were properly vile, you could believe some sick fuck had rubbed some durian on them or something. But as a long-time veggie and longer-time Jew, I don't really know that much about real salami, I had sort of assumed it was probably nice but don't have anything to base that on. Can anyone confirm whether real salami is supposed to taste and smell like absolute dogshit? Cos if that's so, then congratulations to the Squeaky Bean company, they've done an excellent job.

It is with the greatest of regrets that I must report I have absent-mindedly bought these fucking things again, they're still as wretched as previously. Could someone keep an eye on this thread and just quote this post whenever they reckon I might be thinking about buying some processed veggie sandwich slice things? Would be greatly appreciated.
 
I've ever found an edible vegan cheese. Maybe a passable one on a takeaway pizza. In fact I've ditched all processed vegan food unless you count a bean burger or falafel, which I don't.
 
I'd like to put in a good word for Mo-du by Marigold. It's basically seitan in soy sauce that pretends to be duck. Reasonable ingredient list with no junk, good texture. I use it either fried or in sauce in Korean/Chinese/etc. dishes.
 
Not sure whether it counts but the Violife “EPIC MATURE CHEDDAR”… product … is quite spectacular. It transcends badness, goes beyond ‘insulting’, and winds up somewhere in the region of dark humour.
Is it surprisingly juvenile?

Try their pastrami, it's much better.

Although I also really like the salami one. It does taste a bit weird but so does real salami.

Oh yeah, I remember the pastrami being alright, or at least I could eat it without physically gagging.
 
Aldi have started doing their own processed sandwich not-meat slice things, which is a plus in that normally I have to go to either a big Tesco or a little specialist hippy shop to find them, and reckon these'll be cheaper than either of those options, but on the downside they're not that nice. They've gone for pea protein, which seems like it's trendier than soya for some reason now, but it seems to just make everything a bit clammy?
 
Really like Tiba Tempeh curry pieces. They are delicious in curries, stir frys, etc or on their own. They are also healthy: organic and no UPFs. Not sure how widely available they are, got mine from ocado.

They do a range of other Tempeh stuff which I haven't tried yet.
