Worst Band Ever?

I think I have that album

I didn't like Texas but I don't think they were actually shit. Plenty of bands out there who can't actually play properly like U2 and have no redeeming qualities to make up for lack of musical talent.

I don't think that's entirely true. They have a decent local music scene up there....

I live in Leicester. It wasn't bad in the late 80s early 90s as it had the Princess Charlotte and the Polytechnic, which catered for small to medium bands and was fully on the gig circuit. I saw loads of good stuff then, Husker Du, Godflesh, Ride, The Fall, Kraftwerk, to name but a few. Both are long gone. There was a long stretch of nothing much until about a decade ago, and now there's The Soundhouse, The Musician, The Cookie and a couple of others, which run the gamut from endless variations of cover bands with punny names, to the small to medium tours of up-and-coming and established, and local efforts. Have to say I've rarely seen much good in the latter.

Since established acts from Leicester range from the dire (Crazyhead) to dogshit (Kasabian), I don't think it really should be mapped as a musical city of note, particularly with Birmingham, Nottingham and Warwickshire surrounding who can boast far more interesting musical output.

I visit quite a bit, and see some reggae and ska bands who are quite good. I like going to The Donkey, they get a few good bands on their ramshackle stage.

There's a band called Ash Mammal who I like a lot. They are young and the music isn't really my thing, but I like watching them.

There's a lot of session musicians in Leicester.

I've certainly had some fine nights at Spectrum (?) with Aba Shanti-I, so yeah, there is some good roots stuff (though I don't know of any local bands/soundsystems myself). Haven't been to the Donkey for a very long time, so you've just reminded me :)

I saw some of these session musicians you mention performing as part of Damo Suzuki's Network at The Soundhouse, which was amazing.

I hope I didn't come off as dismissive of the Leicester music scene; I was more making the point that IMO the local output isn't at the same level as its neighbours. Venue wise, it's the best it's been for a long time.

Yes, there are some great venues. I really enjoyed Simon Says for the past few years, and was really disappointed it didn't happen this year.

I like the small room at the 02. I saw PIL in the bigger room earlier in the year (that's not a bad space actually).

My GF live about 10mins walk from The Donkey, so we go quite a bit. Saw Jah Wobble, Urban Voodoo Machine, Alabama 3, Resonator...but there are also a lot of dodgy covers bands I don't bother with.

Not sure musical talent is relevant tbh, lots might detest weather report and they could play a bit.....
Also not a U2 fan but could argue their output/brand makes them the ultimate band for the late 20th/early 21st century, granted they are very unliked but Johnny Cash covered them so there must be something there Texas on the other hand are the aural equivalent of a vacuum, or a chronic sinus infection.

I think popularity plays a part. From what I remember, Starsailor and Embrace were on a par in quality with Coldplay, but the latter's lasting commercial success is a big factor in them being worse in my mind.

That, and having Pimple-Faced Kid screeching the vocals.

Many years ago I was a student at Liverpool Uni and saw a band who were uncompromisingly terrible, they'd obviously had changes in membership for no more than any two of them knew any of the songs, and only managed to all sing and play the same tune at the same time once. I did a search and slap me with a wet mackerel but Stun the Guards appear on this page Liverpool: Sl – Sz

blimey, youtube has this - but it sounds waaaaay too good to be them :D

I've never knowingly listened to their music but I've notice an awful lot of Lost Prophets albums in our second hand stores...

There may be factors outside of their sonic quality causing that. Poor old H from Steps has the same real name as their lead singer, and got loads of erroneous shit from people after the latter's conviction.
