Roberto Carlos. A defender who doesn't defend and scores one of his famous free kicks every couple of years.

Thats what pisses me off the most about him, he made popular the nonsense about 'attacking full backs' defenders should defend.

Got to be worth adding Buffon to the list, shaky as fuck.

Archie Gemmil. Fuckin shite. One jammy goal against Holland and he's immortalised on film forever.

Gemmil was no one trick monkey.. I can almost remember him scoring lots of goals for Nottingham Forest.

Cristiano Ronaldo - Plays worse now than in 2004. Added a bad, prima donna temperament to an even greedier ball possession.
Ronaldinho Gorducho - Was great before his injuries and getting himself full or lard. Massively overrated now, but not around 1997
Ronaldinho - Massive ball controlling and release skills, but either performs like a magician, or is under average. The number of games in the first are well above the second.
Rooney - Will play well as long as he has some pace. Once he hits the late twenties will be traded to a relegation zone team for the next big thing
Henry - A lot of talk against slow witted defenders, but no walk against solid defenders or without a man feeding him through passes, and now is turning into a "It's le referee" Whigner kind of player.
Lampard - hard working midfielder, but who's miles behind Ballack as far as a complete player is. Seeing him losing a ball to Ronaldinho put a stone over the "best player" argument for good.
Riquelme - A born loser, who can only play in teams where he's the man, and nobody else. Will screw up for Argentina later this competition with a missed penalty or a disastrous performance.
Beckham - Looks like a Frigate in the middle of a war. Doesn't get the dirty stuff close, but wrecks havoc with long passes. On his defense, I see him playing better now than 2/3 years ago.

So, everyone is overrated. There you go.

Silva, with respect you're talking shite...

Henry is class, he took Arsenal to the CL. Lampard is imho.

Why don't you harp on about has-beens instead who had excellent and indifferent games, so who do you rate then??

In case you haven't noticed, I was being ironic (no surprise, I'm wasting my irony marks writting about the WC). Any player on that list has been hyped, in one occasion or other, well beyond his actual abilities. While reading some texts about them, I'd believe Henry could win the 100m dash against Gatlin, Powell and Obikwelu while dribbling a ball and jumping hurdles, Ronaldinho could juggle the ball over the head and between the legs of five experienced defenders at once with three balls, Lamps could play with five fat goalkeepers strapped on his back and CRonaldo could stepover five defenders inside a phone booth and then nutmeg the streetlight next to it.

No player on that list is absolutely shit or even average (the reason I haven't voted, mind), but I've seen at least one serious text about each and every one of them rating them as "the best since Pele". And during the World Cup every commentator rants about "the best giving their best" and the usual shit, which is far from the truth. Hence my comment.

He is however, probably the best long passer and free-kick taker ever
You think? Glenn Hoddle, Michel Platini, Roberto Baggio, Ronald Koeman, Gianfranco Zola and Sinisa Mihaljovic might beg to differ. Not to mention Michael Carrick if we just look at England, who is at least his equal at passing, and with both feet.

Interesting that all of those nominated, bar Carlos, is a midfielder or attacker. I always feel sorry for defenders and goalies who always seem to be left out of "greatest" summaries. Beckenbauer and Moore rank among the best players ever, and if you look at whole careers I would say Paulo Maldini is the greatest player still playing.

Defenders are not usually as overrated/hyped up but a poll on overrated defenders might be interesting.

Yeah, only the good ones are really noticed, then again you look at say, samuel, mexes, both ascended qucikly and descended quicker.

Do you never, ever get bored with banging on about Carrick?

Because the rest of us do.

I've never seen him that much, is he really in the Alonso/Pirlo/Riquelme/Bergkamp class of passer ?

To call Henry overrated is pretty near sighted. He practically dons our own league by himslef without even breaking a sweat.

Suprised Pele got so few votes...Not suprised how many people think Roberto Carlos is overrated though. He plays like a kid who has just learnt he can kick the ball quite hard and it can swerve as well...

I would if it wasn't so glaringly obvious to play him and wasn't so ignored with carefree abandon. Having said that 5 Live reckon he'll play against Ecuador. He has gifts which no other current England player has and I think it's criminal to not use them when they would complement our two most important attackers in Gerrard and Rooney.
