worlds greatest actor (ch4, sunday 9pm-1am) - your thoughts?

Hmmm. just caught a flash of it.

Pitt is a fine actor, it's just he lets himself down with rubbish roles occasionally.

wasn't brian blessed lovely and luvvie about him?

"he just needs a director to open him out"

pitt is amazing though. His looks are almost certainly a hinderance, so age will help.

was surprised to see kate winslet that high up the list. she's very good, but better than, say, vivien leigh?

Don't understand winslet at all to be honest

Blessed reminded me of this pic...

:D

Can't watch the damn thing, my housemates are watching MTV

Curses, really? I guess his genius was more rounded than acting though :)

The Third Man still rates as no.2 on my favourite films.

(no.1 is ghostbusters ;))

The American Film Institute published a list of the 50 Greatest American Screen Legends in 1999 (25 men and 25 women).

The top 5 actors were: Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, James Stewart, Marlon Brando and Fred Astaire.

The top 5 actresses were: Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Audrey Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman and Greta Garbo.

Whilst that list only considered actors whose careers had started before 1950 or were dead, I would still consider that these actors should rank near the very top if the period covered were extended.

I agree with film critic Roger Ebert, who wrote about the unveiling of that list at the time:

"We also learn that degrees of greatness can be measured, and that stars who were one of a kind are now one of 25...to me the great stars are unique, individual, INCOMPARABLE, and shouldn't be ranked like Derby entries."

Unfortunately, Channel 4 seems to be obsessed with list programmes.

Another vote for Toni Collette - I think she's fantastic.

Hmm blokes are more tricky. I can't see beyond the fact that I dislike some of them (Cruise, Crowe (sorry spangles), Hanks :( ) and fancy others (Pitt, Gyllenhall) so I'm not that objective :o

I think Mike Pearce is really good though of 'today's' actors.

Will have to think some more ... :)

I'm a fan of Nicholson, but I'd agree that he doesn't have a broad range.

He does eccentric and slightly dangerous really well, and he does completely mad and very dangerous extremely well.

When he tries sad and slightly eccentric but basically harmless he doesn't quite succeed, except in As Good As It gets when he's right on the edge of slightly dangerous.

has sellers been in yet?
yup - little way back

10 Spencer Tracy
9 Katherine Hepburn (spooky!)
8 Judi Dench

apparently the poll was from british and american actors.

edit -

7 Nicholson

Nicholson, I wanted him top 5 at least *theatrical sigh, crosses to fireplace* ;)

De Niro does not deserve to be that far up the list IMO. He's good, but dear god he's lost it now. Pacino is the same, picking up his paycheck and sleepwalking through stuff :(

Has Jean Reno cropped up, because as much as I like Leon and even Ronin (yeah, I know DeNiro...) I can't get over Godzilla and the bloody Barclays adverts

Arnold Swarshernegger or Sylvester Stallone.

Die, fiend from hell! :p

As much as I love Total Recall for Verhoevens direction, as much as I love Rocky because it's a big dumb movie....no. NO.

;) Predator is well good though.
