Rachid Taha - it's Rai really but of course it will, inevtably, be found in the World Music section. Sigh!
I recently bought a CD by Mako in Germany. I think they may be French/Haitian? No idea and I haven't been lucky with Googling yet. Bit of mixture but veers into Drum 'n Bass. Anyone heard of them?

The Ukranians

The Ukrainians are fab, but I mainly saw them in the early to mid 90s, and I was under the impression until recently that they'd split up. But it would seem they're still active!! Really hoping they'll play some festival or other this summer.

They did a cover of 'The Queen Is Dead' in Ukranian ... :p

They are Leeds people of Ukranian descent ...

Ojos De Brujo, quite simply the best live band in the world.
They're playing soon in London :), but a venue with seating only

Everyone else has mentioned the bands/people I thought of.

I really want to get one of those congotronics albums. Would anyone recomend one over the other or are they both as good as each other?

Indirect recommendation from my brother, who's well into this kinda stuff :

He likes them both, but prefers the first :)

there's a good Afrobeat comp i got compiled by The Shrine club - all Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade, that sort of thing.

Can you let me know more? My last visit to britain was three years ago and i thought i'd exhausted all afro beat cds, but i don't have anything with both fela and king sunny on it. Which cd is this? I want to get it!

And incidentally i've been waiting ages for femi kuti to come out with another album, and finally he's done it, a live one: Africa Shrine, and right now i cannot get enough of it. If he carries on like this he'll outdo his old man...

the first track after the intro is, memory decay accounted for, the finest track of music ever released that hit my ears.
