Just picked up Chile in the office sweepstake and in lieu of any hope of winning I resigned myself to "at least the food might be good".

Got me thinking, in the interests of creating a holistic World Cup experience, what recipes could accompany our football feast? And what match would produce the best meal?

I'm watching Spain v Netherlands at my friend's house on Friday, so far I have suggested paella and Leerdammer :hmm:

As I like any excuse to do a bit of cooking, I've a plan to cook a dish from each participating nation to coincide with one of their matches. Thursday is going to be
Coxinhas [IMG] and Medimurje gibanica [IMG]

That's what I'm talking about

Coxinhas look nice, though the cake looks like aubergine and beef lasagne topped with icing sugar :hmm:*

*yes, I've looked at the ingredients and know it's not really :p

Coxinhas were pretty good. Turned out like this: [IMG]
Croat cake was so-so, three layers were excellent and one (poppy seeds one) wasn't sweet enough. It also looked like meat.

Still going. Tonight Switzerland v Ecuador (Potato Rösti v Octupus Ceviche)

  13. 8den

8den No I'm pretty sure that was 8ball...

For World cup 2006 Delia did a thing in the Guardian about "half time meals". Tasty meals completely done from end of 1st half to start of the 2nd. I still think its the easiest bestest eggs benedict I've made.

    Ecuadorian Baby Octopus ceviche:

8 baby octupi (can find them frozen in most east asian grocery shops)
    Boil it for 45 minutes.
Put in a bowl, mix with juice of 4 lemons and 1 lime, half a big red onion sliced thin, handful of finely chopped coriander, half a mild red chilli (seeds removed) & 2 table spoons olive oil.

What has been the best match so far, from your culinary perspective?

Hmmm... Mexico v Cameroon I reckon. Mole Poblano was like Satay but with more depth of flavour, and Cameroonian donuts were nice puffy things covered in vanilla sugar

Roast beef has been suggested, but I was thinking homemade Sausage rolls.

dunno how the concept of roasted beef became englands signature dish. The roasting of dead cowflesh is hardly unique or innovative.

    Mmm, that does sound good.

This is a much better way to experience the tournament! If only was a better/less lazy cook

It's been a bit of saving grace for the football-hating people around me, who are tolerating 6-8hrs of football a day at the moment
