FA ponders 2030 World Cup bid after declaring confidence in voting process

Wonder if this will happen? Seems to be the 'England' World Cup that is being touted but would be good to see a World Cup hosted by the UK and Eire.

In many respects I'd love it to happen. I'd also love it also to include Wales, Scotland and Ireland as venues given the magnitude of the event. Though at the same time, fuck FIFA.

    Indeed

I hate FIFA but despite my general meh about the Olympics that really raised the mood in the country. Would be good if we could open our doors and collaborate across the UK and Eire. Too much to hope for?

Euro 2020 matches are taking place across Europe, World Cup 2026 will be across USA, Canada and Mexico; would be great to have a joint UK and Ireland bid, but nothing in the FA's history currently convinces me they'd think like that. I await being pleasantly surprised, but I'm not holding my breath.

    Not going to happen.

The biggest purpose built football stadium in the Republic is 8,000 capacity.

Crooke Park holds 70k, so could be used, I guess.

I think Antarctica should be the logical follow-up to Qatar.

Aviva stadium? Holds 51k and looks great

ETA. OK I know its multi-purpose. But so are many WC venues.

OK, forgot about that one. But same applies: You wouldn't have two stadiums in one city used, so that leaves 1 stadium in Ireland suitable for a WC game (either one of the Dublin ones mentioned).

The Millennium is way better than Wembley in terms of location, nearby bars, view and atmosphere - so that's where the final should be, please. Thanks.

Shouldn't be a reason not to include though. I'd imagine outside of England, games could only be held in Dublin, Cardiff and Glasgow. Because no other city in those countries would have a stadium big enough.

The size of the World Cup is growing and there should be funding to improve stadium infrastructure plus potentially build more?

Training camps and other stuff too :hmm:

Maybe the Brexit dividend could fund it?

    Except it's not, is it?

London is better than anywhere else in terms of international access.

Even Manchester is better than Cardiff in that respect.

Except it is. Wembley is a fucking shithole to get to and an absolute desert when it comes to nearby facilities, pubs, restaurants etc. It's an awful, awful place to visit and it's always a ballache on the tube.

Compare and contrast with the Millennium: 3 mins walk from Cardiff station and surrounded on every corner by more pubs and restaurants that you can shake a stick at. And it's a nice place to visit to.

    I specifically mentioned international access.

Going from Brazil to Heathrow to Wembley is a lot easier than going Brazil to Heathrow to the Millenium Stadium.

You appear to be assuming that the teams will be flying directly to each ground for each game.

  17. marty21

marty21 One on one? You're crazy.

Swansea and Edinburgh would disagree with you, I'm sure I heard that Liberty Stadium could be expanded, and there's a few years left to do that, and surely Murrayfield could be used as well ?

I'm talking about the immediate vicinity of the stadiums - i.e. what the fans experience on the day of the match. If you want to argue that Wembley is a nicer place to visit than Cardiff's city centre, let's hear your arguments. Bring it on.

Not even talking about the teams. I'm talking about the fans.

Cardiff is a nice city, I agree, but I reckon people flying from Brazil to watch the WC in the UK will want to spend a lot of time in London. They'll be almost certainly flying into London anyway.

So, going there already, staying there already = better location than a city in another country.

Amazingly, Wales is a hugely popular place to visit and as it's only two hours by train from London, visitors would have zero problem experiencing both cities. I wouldn't want to inflict a stay in Wembley on anyone, or the joys of matchday tubes.

I much prefer the Millennium Stadium myself

It really does not matter one jot where the final is held. This is not a big country and it would be good to spread it around

You don't need to convince me on how nice Wales is. I've been many times and I love it.

But it's not a better location for the final than London. Or Manchester.

  24. skyscraper101

    skyscraper101 0891 50 50 50

It's a moot point because the final would inevitably be at Wembley. It's a soulless shitehole compered to Cardiff and the Millennium Stadium I agree but that's still where it'd be.

If I was going to watch a huge game, I'd rather watch it in the Millennium than be forced to trudge out to dire Wembley. It really is a fucking shit place. Every time I've been, I've had to go to fucking Harrow or somewhere to get a drink because there's fuck all around Wembley, so there's no proper collective pre-match build up and it's the same story after the game. And there's little more deflating after a match than not being able to get a drink for ages because you're stuck at the tube station.

And the Millennium - with its steep seats - has a better atmosphere and better views and you can be in a pub literally minutes after the final whistle. I'm sure Wembley would be chosen but it is really fucking shit.

Could you imagine the English tabloids hellfire if "our" World Cup (it's really coming home this time... 1966 etc etc) wasn't going to be at Wembley Stadium :D

Take nothing away from Cardiff though I totally agree its a nicer venue and way better to get a drink in the surrounding area and hangout and get transport to/from.

If the finals of the WC was distributed across England, Wales, Scotland, NI and/or ROI, how many of those countries/principalities would get automatic entry to the finals? If it’s all of them, that’s a lot of automatic entries.
