Working Xmas again - can they do this to me?

I would go and say 'I know that the rota is random but I worked last xmas and the one before. I'd like to swap shifts with someone else this year as I don't think it's very fair for any one team member to have to work xmas every year'.

But if you've fucked your boss off today, you might want to wait until Monday
I've just had a word and everyone's just said that's just bad luck - nowt I can do unless I arrange cover - so I'll have to do some pleading, perhaps showing pics of my nephew crying

Option 1 - what Trashpony said

Option - go to a colleague who is doing shifts you would feel happieaar with and calmly ask if they would swap as you worked the last 2 years

ETA it sounds as though they just continue the normal rota pattern over Xmas / NY? Maybe would be better if they considered those 2 weeks separately in order to ensure fairness, that's what we used to do where I worked.

I think you should raise it as an issue and if they're not willing to be reasonable you've got plenty time to look for another job.

I also don't see how people who've made a lifestyle choice to have kids should get priority unless they are being paid less for being able to offer less commitment.

Well, I've done the former, so it's time for the latter

They get paid more for having kids actually - an extra £150 a month

Get religion, then remind them it is illegal to make you work your holy days if you don't want to. ;)

Personally, anyone asking me to make plans for next christmas just now would be chancing it. Far too soon!

What in their actual pay packet or as a benefit (i.e nursery vouchers).

Is that right according to Employment Law?
Pay packet. It's a perk thing I think - doubt it's a legal thing, just makes them look good

Become Jewish, then you will need to get home on a Friday before the sun goes down. Sweet!

If all else fails I seriously think you should... they take the piss, you take the piss, innit.
I would never do that to someone - phone in sick on Xmas Day, so someone else would have to come in when they've not expected to - that's well out of order and everyone would hate me.

Fuck Christmas, I hate it anyway.
Buy some ginger hair dye or do some kind of weird Freaky Friday body swap, and I'll do your shift for you.

Your problem is that your too nice . We have about 11 months to work on your evil streak so you won't mind shafting your colleauges to suit yourself !

Kids cost a lot, so parents get extra

So do cats and shoes and aloholic beverages - are there any companies where shoe-loving people who like to drink wine and have cats get paid extra??

I like being nice - I'm no doormat - but I like where I work to be a pleasant place.
Now I've calmed down I think I can sort this out amicably - cos my colleagues are nice too and would probably be inclined to help me out here
