Working with kids with learning disabilities

I'm gonna stop derailing my job thread ;) and explain my hilarious "bite" joke over here. There was this one kid I knew who bit when he was pissed off. Fortunately he was mostly happy. But once we were sitting on the grass, he got upset, leaned over and chomped me on the thigh. Followed by large bruise, and people making assumptions about my boyfriend!

But biting aside, yeah the kids might get agitated and/or violent, but it's really not as bad as you think, once you know them, and have a feel for how to communicate with them, you'll be surprised at how calmly you can deal with it.

Massy, Mr Inappropriate and I put you through more than that during a regular weekend jaunt

This job'll be a doddle

:)

Well after worrying so much the day turned out to be nothing less than brilliant. Really enjoyed myself in fact. :)

Got off to a rocky start when the first kid I saw took one look at me and said "oh no" and buried his head in his hands. :D Then he asked what team I supported and looked disgusted when I said man City. (He was in full Arsenal kit). From then on I just thought "fuck it" and ripped the piss out of the little git (not standard procedure I'm sure :o ) until eventually he marched me to the manager and said "I like this one, can she have the job?" :D

Then we played playstation.

Then I found myself watching Star Wars with three 14 year old boys fighting to snuggle up to me on the sofa and asking to marry me.

I'm sure there are tougher days than this in the unit, but it was an ace introduction. Even if i don't get this particular job it has definitely made me feel more confident that I am making the right career choice. The kids are totally totally ace.

massy I'm keeping everything crossed for you that you get this job.

even my legs.

so you'd best bloody get it :D

I felt all mushy at your description on your day

What about the space bunnies, though? I'm definitely going to see if I can get them involved.

Between the baby jesus, tanky's crossed legs, the fairies and the space bunnies, you can't fail!

Working with kids makes it all make sense somehow.:)

Keep us updated.

WORD ;)

Sounds like you took to it really well, nice one Massy, I really hope you get it! And like you said even if you don't, you at least know that you're really good at it now.

Well done!!!

God, sounds really tough.. two interviews and then a session working with them?

I just had the one interview, and then got a phone call offering me a job before I'd even got home!

But then that was with adults, and before the days of CRB.

I did have to do a presentation to the service users at the interview mind, which was a bit of a scary thought.

One interview session, and my manager kept asking one of the service users who he liked most.. he went for the one that everyone else liked least.. at least he didn't go for the ones that a) thought they should all be in bed at 9pm or b) wanted to bring her dog along to the interview or c) the one who turned up 90 minutes early for her interview, and spend the whole time sitting in the living room of the house, totally ignoring the service users and not trying to engage with them!

How not to get a job..!

:D Still no news, which obviously means they don't want me.

Never mind, there's always order picking at Argos. :)
