Working Near The Barbican

They're really pimping the market aren't they? I hope not at the expense of any of the regulars in the long term. The CD sales, builders supplies and all the stuff in plastic tubs are integral parts of the market. Usefull too.

Oh and big thumbs up to the fruit&veg stall - excellent range and quality, and the guy who runs it is nice :)

As if there wasn't enough food action there already, look at this

lol last time that was on i heard one of the local guys who i see down there quite often on the phone to someone saying, "4 quid?! for a fucking loaf of bread?! they're having a laaaf!!!!"

fair comment, i thought :D

so true
we iz teh snobs:o

I’ve never really considered Waitrose as posh because most the food I buy is usually ‘reduced’ , and the Barbican branch being in such a population wastelands (after 7pm & weekends) there’s always a bargain to be had. :D

it does have a reputation for poshness, but like you say, weekends it's dead quiet around there, you can park right outside the supermarket, or in the car park at the back, no problem, shopping is a breeze:cool:

It is going a bit "Borough market"

Seems that "Eric" form Sillfield farm is going to be doing sausage twistng (?) they have a perm site at Borugh with the pictures and name of the piggies whose bits are now in packets in their shop!!!! I think thats just a tad too much info for my liking but there food is good but well overpriced.
I hope the weird - plugs/hammers/batteries/odd shaped bits of plastic you do god knows what with - everything in plastic tubs in the street stuff doesn't go either and got interesing stuff from the cd man. What happened to the guy who did vinyl aswell as CDs?. seems to have vanished since the rioad got dug up.
Fruit and veg stall is ace - get a lot of me green bits there as Peckham is shite for cabbage/greens/bobbies etc

My office overlooks barbican (City side) - Barbican Library has always been superb for CD's and DVDs - Waitrose is convinient and The Museum of london is very good too.

Some nice eateries on Long Lane, heading into Smitfield too. :)

after years in the fleshpots of Kennington, my company is moving us - till the end of the year or so - to just by the Barbican.

My mates run a pub in Sutton Street, but other than that, what's to do / where's to eat / etc.

Does the Barbican have much stuff in the daytime - exhibitions and the like?

Is it the slaughtered lamb, if thats the case, hats off to 'em...

yeah whitecross market is very good... the warrin thai is the better of the two thai stalls, and at the north end, mantra does 3 veg currries and rice for 3.25, very nice... there is a very cheap cd stall on it as well...

and seconded about peoples choice... nice salad boxes with two fillings for 3 quid...

there is also a very cheap sandwich shop on the corner of clerkenwell road/st johns street.. big portions of slightly school dinnerish pasta for about 2 quid...

*eta* oh and that italian stall run by the old italian man on whitecross is also very good..

Haven't read it all, but I worked for a few years in a building overlooking postman's park - which is gorgeous!

Also you have the Museum of London right on your doorstep! There's an amazing Korean restaurant on the raised walkway east of the Museum of London which does an incredible £6 or £7 all you can eat buffet lunch thing. I was working for a Japanese company and we'd go every now and then. The majority of customers were Japanese or Korean - great food!

Golden Lane swimming pools are very old school (but I'm guessing you're not a swimmer?)

Farringdon is a great place for a stroll - couple of very nice veggie cafe/restaurant options. The sushi takeaway more or less opposite Farringdon train station (which is very good and was used by my company often) sells all it's sushi off half price after 5pm! Great for taking home for dinner.

Got an upstairs too - its slightly nearer the old st end - just beyond the current road dig up scheme on the left if you are walking from the Barbican.
Quite a few people form this building we are in at the mo walk up to that chippy in preference to the one on Sun Street - it is a good one their fish is ace

I prefer that one too. The sun st one charges a bit too much for my liking (frozen chips!!).

There's a chippie near percival st, which I keep meaning to try out - especially since the Shakespeares Head aren't doing their pizzas anymore.

Sun st chippy - well expensive
I assume their "price point" is determined by the proximity of large numbers of geezers in 500 quid suits to whom 2-30 for a SAUISAGE ROLL!!!!!!!!!!! seems reasonable.
Continuing the chippy revue bit of travel can get you to the wonderous, now expanded Happy Days, just off Petticoat Lane close to which is THE best bakery/sandwich - well roll - place ever - Kossoffs. They used to have shops all over but sadly the Empire has shrunk due to an influx of hideous chain sandwich shops. There Salt Beef bagels beat even the 24hr Bagel Bake - the real one, not the posey shit that opened next door:mad: on Brick Lane.

Little bits of historical stuff

Just off White Cross Street runs Golden Lane, where Edward Alleyn built his theatre in the Liberty of Finsbury - bit like the Liberty of Southwark the City fathers sway did not hold here, so all sorts of "lewd shews" were possible
http://www.luminarium.org/encyclopedia/fortune.htm
http://www.luminarium.org/encyclopedia/alleyn.htm
The area has always been interesting, the Borough of Finsbury was extremely forward thinking and may the radical root from which the Peoples Republic of Islington grew. (Battersea was the original Peoples Republic having a Black Mayor in the early 1900s - Islington never as radical as it wanted to be simlpy stole the name and pretended to espouse the ethos)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolitan_Borough_of_Finsbury
The Spa Green Estate, the Finsbury Health centre were all seen as extremely progressive at the time - the health Centre building on some radical work started in Peckham

Though Spa Green was run down for a long time, recently the residents have given the managers a kick up the arse and its soooooo much better.
Oh yeah, Saddlers Wells aint that far off and recently they have been doing some really wicked Flamenco shows -despite their rep as a Modern dance theatre

market rammed today - with all sorts of poncy stalls (i swear one of them just had wineglasses full of olive oil with flowers in) - which meant no friday curry for Crispy

Anyone fancy a pint this evening? I'll be in the trader, wearing a beige/orange tshirt witha pink ape face on the bottom. long hair.

me and my colleague may come down, yes! :) we're going for a drink... might as well walk to barbican.

i'm brunette, have blue eyes & am wearing a kind of flowery vest top & some black and white trousers, black converse trainers, green socks

we just had a meeting & discussed it further. we will be coming to barbican (at 5:21) and one of her mates will be coming too :)

better than the market at christmas though.... allthough I did note that the italian stall had misteriously added 50% to their prices...

I walk past the traider on my way home... I might pop in for one ...
