Workers Beer

What "radical" politics"? I see you used quotation marks but that means diddly squat.
Actually, the quotation marks are pretty much central to the point of that particular snippet of my post. Their politics aren't radical in the slightest, despite their attempts to foster a radical image.

I never claimed that I was anybody's intellectual superior, by the way, I just think you're a fucking moron.

You and your friend are idiots. You'd probably have said the same thing about Sociology in the 70's
I'd have been right, too. And I'm right now, because I'm saying it. Sociology is a fucking joke, a bullshit pseudoscience that exists solely to perpetuate its own existence.

So says you.

have i logged on to the wrong boards? i thought this kinda immediate vituperative threadkilling was a MATB speciality.

Kind of a shame to kill of an interesting thread with your childish spats innit?

This is how it happened. I said this:

The WBC run the Bread & Roses pub in Clapham and you'll never meet a more surly bunch of bar staff in your life. The management don't give a fuck and the food is overpriced and crap.

Irenick decided to pop up and make some uncalled for, and nasty, comments

Really? I was in there two weeks ago; and, found the bar staff charmingly cheerful, whilst wonderfully helpful. Wouldn’t be anything to do with you being a bitterly twisted melange of snot gobbling fuck buggery; would it?

Another

Yet, they spoke well of you – a goat gobbling no-mark whose struggle to achieve the lower ranks of mediocrity was painful to observe.

So, he continued with his snide remarks and was then joined by In Bloom who wanted to put the boot in as well.
Yeah, you have to be pretty smart to teach media studies

Neither of them wanted to contribute to the thread and saw it as an opportunity to stir up trouble and pin the blame on me.

I am quite capable of reading how it happened myself, ta.

Now, act like a grown up lecturer & walk away. Please.

Point of order: I am not a lecturer. I used to be a lecturer (if that's what you call someone who teaches in FE. Teachers in FE spend most of their time either babysitting or dealing in crowd control).

The thing is, these people are going to follow me around the boards with their snide comments. It's not as if I can get really get away from them - is it?

I haven't been in there for quite a few months now but I found them to be generally indifferent. Maybe they've hired some new staff, who knows?

But I can see the real reason for your reply: it's transparently obvious, you wankstain on the escutcheon of humanity. :p

Again you manage to divert a thread into being about you.....Well done nino.....

That's just a very silly thing to say, there is a great wealth of useful knowledge created by sociologists (and criminology is merely one branch of sociology).

Don't suppose you all could set up a separate thread for your discussions, could you?

I was hoping that we could have a discussion about union representation for people who work for Workers' Beer.

Screw it, I'll leave it out.

Does anybody know anything other than what's been posted on that blog? I was quite curious about this after some of the shit people I know have had to put up with from WBC.

Dunno about this but when I've worked for WBC they've always been tossers, but it's definately got worse over the last 2-3 years. Stuff like breaks, tips and the way they speak to bar staff.

I know somebody doing a media degree. He agrees with me, media is a fucking joke subject :p

I did a couple of modules in it. It was enjoyable, but utterly pointless.

Very true - one of the most miserable pubs I've ever been in.

Absolute shitehole

Apart from no lift to the upper floor; I've always found the B&R a really nice place.

It may have got better but as I remember it not a "prole friendly" pub for all the slogans. But that was a while ago.

Not much good since I gave up my stick for a wheelchair. My problem with boozers is accessibility; especially, accessible toilets.

It's a shame that some people seem to have such a bad experience of working for the WBC. They can definitely be disorganised and the managers are over-worked and get pissed off. But for the most part I think the organisation works well.

It does get really fucking busy behind those bars. 6 hours on your feet with a bit of lifting and a lot of rude punters and a few stressed out bosses. It's hard work but I'd think that this would only be a surprise to someone if they'd never worked behind a bar or at serving tables before.

The health and safety situation is a tricky one. It's outdoors and in a temporary structure with no taps, so is never going to be as good as your average workplace. Compared to the burger vans and recycling compounds on site it's good, compared to a wetherspoons it's bad. If I felt that the conditions were unsafe or that I was being badly treated I'd just quit my position until it got sorted, I'm not sure if a WBC servers' union would be able to offer us much more than that tbh.

There is a sense of camaraderie as you work alongside other groups but if there is supposed to be a radical tendency, I've missed it. People tend to volunteer to get into the festival or because they want to fund raise for their organisation. I certainly don't go there to experience a utopian working environment that functions as perfect model for workers' unity. I go there to raise money! The funds we get from the WBC add up to a fair bit and keep us going year on year. We really need them.
