Unfortunately, they managed the same trick at Tottenham Court Road a few years ago - brand spanking new escalator remained unusable for six(?) months as they had to route the power cable down the tube tunnels to an adjacent station AIRC!
I assume the staff cannot work there anymore because of the potential asbestos dust (of course it's fine for you commuters to breathe it?!), and though largely automated the machines still need people to empty/fill them with coins and ticket rolls.
At least it means the kiosk is doing a roaring trade!
Just get on the train without a ticket and buy one at your destination instead - this is perfectly legitimate to do. If you're lucky, you might find that the gates are open at your destination - hey presto, gratis xmas tickets, courtesy of LUL, to ease the pain of all the brixton station shenanigans
