How are England, a team undefeated in competitive matches over 90 minutes for four years, ranked in the top ten?
A complete mystery isn't it?
Is it coming home?
Please tell me it is coming home?
We normally get into the quarters. Not always though. The ranking is about right but...
WE WILL WIN THE WORLD CUP THIS YEAR.
But, but, I have them in the sweepstake.
What teams were they playing though. Undefeated to Scotland doesn't mean much, for instance.
WE? WE? We will?
Still think this?
Around the same mix of teams all European sides play in qualifiers and then well enough to reach the knock out stage of the Euros two years ago.
Qualifying undefeated is better than most. Going no further than last 16/8 is worse than the very best. Hence a top dozen ranking is pretty uncontroversial unless you're indulging in England bashing.
Friendly fixtures count for less and England have lost a few, but the record since 2012 contains a win and a draw against Brazil and wins against Spain, Italy... And an improving Scotland who have moved into the top 30 themselves lately.
10-12 seems about right
Having seen the opening game - i think brazil will struggle as soon as they meet a good team in the knockouts. And they could face chile, spain or holland in the second round.
That defence is rubbish!
Spain to go out this stage.
Holland look pretty poor. I reckon they'll have particular trouble scoring.
err... yes and no. I think yesterday was a bit of a freak. and they'll not got to the final stages. that said once you've beaten the top seed you're more or less qualified anyway
Sorry I was a bit pissed when posting that. If we could make predictions that easily we would all get rich down the bookies.
Before RVPs flying header I thought that Spain would walk it.
I predict most of the teams in the competition - including several of the favourites - will not win the world cup this year.
German mannschaft could wilt in the heat.
4 of the top ten ranked sides lost their opening games
Spain - Lost
Germany - Won
Portugal - Lost
Argentina - Won
Switzerland - Won
Uruguay - Lost
Colombia - Won
Italy - Won
England - Lost
Lose on Thursday and it's all over for England. No pressure then.
Not quite - if England and Costa Rica both lose on Thursday, then England could still qualify with a big win over Costa Rica and a Uruguay defeat to Italy.
Only four teams in the past four tournaments have qualified for the 2nd Round after losing their opening match. So by the law of averages it looks like Spain, Portugal and Uruguay are going out! On a more serious note, it's not just the defeats but the margins of defeat for those three sides; they probably need to win both remaining games as your're only likely to squeeze through on four points with a positive goal difference. (It does seem like a lot of groups have featured the two favourites meeting in the optning match.)
At least we lost to another top 10 side.
Once again though, how the fuck are Switzerland in there but not Netherlands?! They were finalists in the last World Cup!
(Was funnier in my head)
Too busy getting ready for Wimbledon
Now thats funny.
