Is it true that in Iran, a man can volunteer to have the lashes on behalf of a woman? Say, if they were caught in each other's company and they weren't married, and got sentenced to 20 lashes each or whatever.

However painting Iran in simplistic brush strokes, ignoring the ethnic and political uniqueness of Shia Islam and Persian culture, does no favours to the many many Iranians that are literally risking their lives to reform the country.

I don't think that anybody is doing that here. While it is true that there are issues around Western chauvanism with regards to Iran, it's also true that the Iranian government is, to say the least, brutal in its treatment of women and sexual minorities.
