Going back to the OP, can I play Devil's Advocate? Consider the effect of this being a precedent. Suppose they had been granted the right to collect the water. Evil megacorp comes along, buys or rents the land and builds a huge rain collection system, depriving large areas of water. When people complain because they have to buy the water, the megacorp points to the precedent of this couple being allowed to collect the water.

I can't see that as setting a precident as the couples house already exists. Any mega corp rain collecting system would require planning permission and is unlikely to get it for such a large project that would be required to collect sufficient water to be of use to a water company.

What's wrong with socialism? But then, I recall how many self-styled US liberals ratted on their pals in the 50's and got them blacklisted.

It would seem that your understanding of socialism and Marxism comes directly from the former Eastern bloc countries.

It's not really much to do with capitalism. It's just the application of irrational law. The water laws are there to protect other people downstream who may be dependent on the water supply.

And those laws are created by capitalists who operate within a capitalist system.
