Womad 2007

Nah, Friction was on on Friday - I think you were probably listening to Clipz, the entire line up in there from 8 till 11 on Saturday was bristol DJs

I think you'll find William is getting his venues mixed up. Friction & Nihal (& Beat Bristol) were in the Little Big Top. He was in the Asian Network tent.

Excessive reverence given by some of the crowd to the Earl of Suffolk and Viscount Andover when they came on stage to welcome people on Thursday -- they were blandly, poshly pleasant enough, and comparatively harmless, but there's really no need at all for that amount of clapping -- distracts me from measuring them for lampposts!

Given the fact that the majority of the crowd at that point in time were the mums & dads of the local kids who were about to appear on stage & these are also the people who clean the Earl's boots, polish his guns & generally doff their caps & suck up to him on a day to day basis I'd say the rapturous welcome he received was totally understandable. :p

If that's the case then it was most likely Friction again - he's the Asian Network's resident dnb chap and regularly gets wheeled out wherever the pink ambulance pitches up in the summer.

Excuse me sir ? JTG knew exactly where I meant, and so did I -- I missed the actual Friction/Nidal set unfortunately ... just wondered whether DJF was doing another one later on ..

Yeah, it could well have been him ... he was excellent anyway :)

Never really picked up on him before though. so it's hard to be definite.

I should have asked at the time! :o

Slave mentality ...

Hadn't really thought about the crowd-localism factor ...

Bloody Wiltshire! ;) :D

</Urban mentality :p>

Great festival. Have to add my bit about the moaners though. Was chatting at the MAIN STAGE with two friends during the Baba Mal set when the guy came up to us and said

"I've had to move forward because all I can hear is you and not the musicians. Please respect others and keep your noise down. Thankyou"

Before we had a chance to smash his face in (let alone 'tut' loudly) Mr World Music had moved forward to immerce himself in his self congratulatory pompus world.

Bemused.

to be fair though i found the sound REALLY quiet for Baba Maal, i kept having to move forwards to feel i was actually involved in the performance.

but yeah, i encountered rudeness like that most of the weekend.

well yeah thats my point, there were two rows facing each other of perhaps 75 toilets next to each other.

god they stank.

the only good thing i can see is that they were easier to empty.
That must have been minging :(

I must say, nothing I've read on this thread has made me want to go :D

there was a point where jtg said 'bees wants come and do this' and i just thought

'WHAT!!!'

The bogs by the Water Aid stand, near the Red Cross tent, were kept in pretty fair order IMO.

tbh the great majority of Womad goers are inoffensive, mild-mannered people.

Acts I didn't like much: Vieux Farka Toure, and Antibalas.

Good acts: Candi Staton, Calexico, Toots and the Maytals, Sam Tshabalala, and Secko Keita.

Did anyone clock Steve Jones wandering around?

I'm quite tempted to do the stewarding thing with you lot next year, I just wouldn't want to go as a punter :)

Saw Kronos Quarter there - first time - they were good. I suppose that's it, really, the music and entertainment is world class, the site's lovely, there's nice people everywhere, and you can just blank out the rude folk.

Bet it's nice and sunny next year

good job it was at womad though with that layout otherwise there'd have been a fair few toilets getting tipped:eek:

Try it, you might be surprised???

me either. i've been tempted a couple of times, but i think the majority of the festivalgoers would drive me batshit

(This to bees as well, but I guess one's musical tastes have quite a bearing also)

My (main) post was pretty positive -- as someone who's been accused before now, and correctly at times :o of being unable to rise above/'just ignore' shitty stuff, I think I did pretty well at relegating the very few idiots to the unimportant corner.

There really weren't that many of them at all, and I got to see Calexico and ADF and all that :D (plus a huge variety of other fascinating stuff).

I know/met plenty of other WOMAD goers with the same mentality, I reckon we outnumbered the rest by some considerable distance ...

The person BigPhil was talking about was clearly a pompous twat, but maybe he was unlucky, I encountered very few of em -- piece of piss to avoid.

The crowd for ADF were as up for it as you like.

ETA : now noticed that bees is thinking of being a Steward, quite a good way into it I reckon :)

The smell was worse than the actual cleanliness levels inside, which were generally OK, they got cleaned and emptied more than enough times. Weird that they weren't worse though, admittedly.

Next time they'll have to distribute them more sensibly. And get urinals ...

I thought the loos were great! Yeah the positioning left something to be desired but they were always clean, almost always had a ready supply of loo roll & hand sanitizer & I never queued once. The smell wasn't even particularly unpleasant when they were being emptied - or maybe that was down to my cold. :)

Loos were fine. The only grumble I had was lack of stand pipes. Near one of the entrances to the main section they had a stand pipe, just inside the disabled bit which could be used through the fence. But at the begining of the festival this was guarded by a stuard making sure you did not use it.

Every other tap had a big queue. The steward here growled at anyone who dared to try to get some water from here. Result one stand pipe not used and the others a long way away with long queues.

However I guess I only noticed this because it was a pain in the arse to walk to the next stand pipe due to the mud.

I found the cleanliness of the toilets fine but agree with the positioning of them. I found there was a lack of handwashing facilities around the toilets with over reliance on the alco gel. Up in the campervan and family area there was no local toilets till later on the Friday...this is not a grumble as everything got shot due to weather but it did make things a bit tricky and myself amongst others were using a bucket...:o
