Rivermead playing fields are the most idiotic site EVER for a camping-based festival

Gave it a miss last year (and by all accounts was wise to). Rivermead 2005 was only saved by the music. Far too many thieves, feeeelthy toilets , battalions of crooning ethno-musicologists worshipping at the Radio 3 tent and not getting into any festival spirit AT ALL, and rain and Reading spoiled it for me.

2006 sounded worse by all reports.

I agree, it's a hopeless site. Coupling an unprotected campsite with a towncentre location was never likely to work. The last one I remember going to- 2002 maybe?- we had a tent slashed and stuff nicked.

But then Womad somehow always manage to organise festivals in a really strange way- always have, I've been going on and off since the first one. It's only really the Carleon Bay ones that worked as festivals, the rest have been a hybrid of music event with camping alongside and nonsensical messing around with turnstiles and being cleared out after the show.

It looks like a magic site this year...

Anyone going to this who will have space in their vehicle? Even to carry the tent sleeping bags etc. would be good. I don't mind getting the train, but it would be nice not to be too laidened down as will need to bring other supplies.

Of course I don't expect anything for free and am willing to contribute to petrol money or whatever...

Not going this year but I went about 6 or 7 years running, includung working at a couple.
Always had a good time and it was always good weather for me, nice atmosphere, music etc. It's a great festival.
I actually liked the Reading site, it was easy to get to if you have no transport, used to get the train (only 30 mins from London) and walked to the site from the station. Being near the town was very handy for buying water etc. at normal prices instead of inflated festival costs.

We're just outside the small town of Malmesbury at the new site (about a mile or two away??) so replenishing supplies won't be a problem this year either.

I booked my train ticket last week, to Kemble. It was only £16= return on an early booking (when I went to Cloo's wedding on a late booking, the return to Kemble was £27=! ).

And there's a free bus service laid on by WOMAD, between Kemble station (7 miles away) and the site, also to/from Chippenham station, 12 miles off ...

I hope to be on site and setting up by about 2 pm the Thursday.
