WLAN on a mobile phone

there's still a lot of open access wifi, but mostly it's not exactly advertised or listed. There's a little app called Hitchhiker available for windows mobile, I don't know if there's an S60 version or equivalent. When you turn on the wifi it finds either your home network or any other open way of getting you onto the internet, then manages all the logins etc automagically. So you don't need to know anything about free access points, within a minute or so you're either connected to the internet or you're not

I'll have a look for that, thanks newbie. Mine searches automatically but you then have to go through each one to see if it's free or not.

I *think* there's an app like that on the Nokia Ovi store.

There is something called "WLAN wizard" on my N95; I expect it's on all Wifi enabled nokias. Look in the "Tools" menu. That will show you a list of Wifi connections with different symbols showing whether they are password protected etc. I use it when I'm abroad to find free Wifi, to avoid having to pay for data when I want to check email and stuff. I usually find that if you wander around residential areas for a while keeping an eye on what it's picking up, you'll find an unprotected connection eventually.

I also use Opera Mini; it's loads better than the built in Nokia browser which is frankly a bit rubbish.

I use it in "mobile view" mode (look in settings) - this makes it really fast and also really easy to navigate around webpages - no fiddling about with a little pointer and the D-pad; it formats everything to fit the width of the screen, then you toggle left/right to scroll up and down the page and up/down to move from link button to link button. Once you get used to it it's a really easy way to navigate. It reformats some pages in an odd way sometimes, but I've found that I've gotten used to this and it's rare that it makes them unusable. Works well with U75 if you set U75 preferences to mobile mode or whatever it's called.

Yep I've got the WLAN wizard as well, I'll have a look for those symbols till I find newbie's Hitchhiker or equiv.

I need to look around Opera mini a bit more to get used to it.
